Planning Guide · 48 Years on the Mountain
Best Time to Climb Kilimanjaro 2026
There is no single best month to climb Kilimanjaro. Every season has trade-offs — weather, crowds, cost, and your summit odds all shift depending on when you go. Here is what 48 years on the mountain actually looks like.
The Short Answer
January, February, July, August, September. These are the clearest, driest months with the highest summit success rates.
April and November (rainy seasons). Trails become difficult, visibility poor, and success rates drop significantly.
Tanzania's Two Climbing Seasons
Peak Season
July and August are the most popular months. Cold, clear, dry — summit views are spectacular. Trails are at their busiest, especially on Machame.
- — Coldest at summit (-20°C to -25°C in July/August)
- — Best visibility windows
- — Book 6–9 months ahead for July/August
- — Northern Circuit recommended for solitude
Hidden Peak Season
Outstanding conditions — cold, clear skies, low foot traffic. Often better value than peak season with similar summit odds.
- — Fewer climbers on all routes
- — Similar conditions to July/August
- — Often better availability and pricing
- — Late March: long rains arrive
Month-by-Month Breakdown
Short dry season. Cold and clear. Less crowded than peak. Excellent visibility. One of the best months to climb.
Outstanding. Dry, clear skies, low precipitation. Cold at summit. Fewer crowds than July/August. Often called the hidden peak season.
Long rains arrive mid-to-late March. Early March (before 10th) is still dry — late March sees increasing precipitation. Summit still achievable above 4,000m. Rongai route recommended if climbing late March.
Peak of long rainy season. Southern routes: muddy trails, poor visibility, low cloud. Rongai Route (northern side) stays significantly drier. Late April (from ~25th) may show early transition. Avoid unless no flexibility — or choose Rongai.
Long rains tapering. Early May remains wet; by mid-month the transition begins. From May 20+: conditions improve rapidly — experienced climbers report near-dry-season clarity by month's end. Rongai and Northern Circuit particularly viable.
Dry season properly established. One of the most underrated months — near-peak conditions with 30–40% fewer climbers than July/August. Clear trails, excellent visibility, quiet camps.
Prime season. Dry, cold, clear. Coldest month at summit but best visibility. Busiest month — Lemosho and Northern Circuit recommended to avoid Machame crowds.
Same as July. Peak season, peak crowds. Book 6–9 months in advance. Northern Circuit highly recommended for those wanting solitude.
Dry season continues. Slightly warmer than July/August. Crowds thinning. One of the best months — great conditions, less competition for camp sites.
Short rains beginning mid-to-late October. Early October is very good. Late October becomes unpredictable. Check forecast closer to date.
Short rains in full effect. Wet lower slopes, cloud cover reduces summit views. Not recommended for first-timers.
Short rains usually end mid-December. Late December (Christmas–New Year) is popular and conditions are often good but less reliable than Jan–Feb.

Does Timing Vary by Route?
Most crowded in July/August. If climbing peak season, consider Lemosho or Northern Circuit instead. Barranco Wall can be slow when congested.
Better for peak season than Machame — fewer climbers. Starts in remote forest. Joins main trail at Shira Plateau.
Approaches from Kenya border — lower rainfall on north side. Often viable when southern routes get wet in shoulder seasons.
Least affected by seasonal crowds — only ~5% of climbers use this route. Best in any season for solitude. Excellent in peak.
Only hut route — stays drier in light rain. But low success rate makes timing even more important. Avoid rainy seasons entirely.
Add a Safari After Your Climb
The northern circuit — Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire — is a few hours from Moshi. The best combined timing:
January–February
Calving season in Ngorongoro and Ndutu — thousands of newborn wildebeest, exceptional predator action. Perfect post-summit wildlife recovery.
June–October
Great Migration in the northern Serengeti — Mara River crossings begin late June, peak July–August. Dramatic and unforgettable after the summit.
