Climb Kilimanjaro in January
Dry weather. Clear summit views. 94% summit success rate. January is one of the two best months to climb Kilimanjaro.
January is one of the two best months to climb Kilimanjaro — and for many climbers, the favourite. After the short rains of November, the weather is clear and dry. The snow-capped summit of Africa glistens in the sun, the trails are in perfect condition, and the views from the top are at their most spectacular.
It is also the month when most European travellers arrive in Tanzania: Christmas holidays are over, but the dry season is in full swing. If you are considering a January climb, here is everything you need to know.

Why January
4 Reasons to Climb in January
01
Dry Season = Perfect Trail Conditions
The trails are in excellent condition. No mud, no water crossings, stable footing throughout. After November's rains, the paths are clean and safe at every altitude.
02
Clearest Summit Views of the Year
January falls in the dry season peak. Kibo's glaciers are most visible at this time of year. On clear days you can see the Serengeti plains from the summit.
03
Highest January Summit Success Rates
Our January climbers achieve a 94% summit rate. Dry weather eliminates the wet, slippery conditions that cause turned ankles and aborted attempts in the rainy season.
04
Quieter Than August
January is popular, but crowding peaks in August. Climbers who book early January (1–15 January) find significantly fewer fellow trekkers on the mountain.
Practical Tips
January Climbing Checklist
Top Layer: Extreme Cold
-22°C on the summit. Bring a certified -20°C sleeping bag and a thick down jacket. This is not overreacting — these are the actual temperatures you will face on summit night.
Sun Protection: High Priority
The air is thinner and UV is 40% stronger than at sea level. SPF 50+ on your face every two hours, and reapply after sweating. Coat your lips and nose with petroleum jelly.
Hydration: 3–4 Litres
January's dry air dehydrates your body faster than you realise. Target 3 litres per day below 4,000m, 4 litres above.
Batteries: Keep Them Warm
Batteries lose 50% capacity at -20°C. Store spares in an inside pocket against your body. Start summit night with fully charged batteries.
Combine
Add a Safari After Your Summit
After 7–9 days on the mountain, the Serengeti is the perfect reward. The great migration is in full swing in July–August, but January offers excellent wildlife safaris in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro.
Save €550 with our combo package versus booking separately. Same guides, seamless transition from mountain to safari.
