The peak season crowds have not yet reached their August maximum — making early June one of the best windows of the entire year.
Success rates are 90% and the weather is reliably clear. June is one of our most recommended months for first-time climbers and experienced trekkers alike. The only caveat: June is increasingly popular, and the best routes and dates book up 3–4 months in advance.

Heath/Moorland (2,800–4,000m)
+3°C to +12°CDry, clear, windyCold nights, pleasant daytime temperatures. Clear skies most days with excellent visibility. The landscape is brown and dry at this altitude — classic alpine desert.
Alpine Desert (4,000–5,000m)
-5°C to +6°CDry, excellent footingCold nights, mild midday. Large temperature swings. Trail conditions are excellent — dry, firm, no ice. The dry season delivers its best trail quality.

June climber tip: The dry air in June means faster dehydration than you might expect. Target 3–4 litres of water per day. Also watch for sunburn — UV is strong at altitude even on cloudy days, and the dry air can mask early burning.
Why June
4 Reasons to Climb in June
01
Dry Season Trail Conditions
The long rainy season has ended. Trails are dry, firm, and in excellent condition throughout. No mud, no water crossings, stable footing at every altitude. The mountain is at its most accessible.
02
Clearest Views of the Year Begin
June marks the start of the clearest visibility period. Kibo's summit views are typically unobstructed. On clear mornings, you can see the curvature of the Earth from the summit.
03
Quieter Than July–August
June is the start of peak season but the crowds are building rather than peaked. Early June in particular is significantly quieter than mid-July onward. Book early June for the best balance of conditions and solitude.
04
High June Summit Success Rates
90% overall summit rate. The combination of dry trails, clear weather, and good acclimatisation itineraries makes June one of the most successful months on the mountain.
Practical Tips
June Climbing Checklist
Book 3–4 Months Ahead
June is growing in popularity. Northern Circuit and Lemosho in particular fill quickly. Do not leave your permit booking to the last minute — by March, early June departures are often taken.
Hydration: 3–4 Litres
June's dry air accelerates moisture loss. Target 3–4 litres per day. The altitude and dry air combination means you will lose moisture faster than at sea level.
Summit Gear: Full Winter Kit
Summit night at -22°C with wind chill to -28°C requires full cold weather gear. Down jacket rated -20°C, three glove layers, balaclava, merino base layers. The dry cold feels different from wet cold but it is equally serious.
Sun Protection: Essential
UV at altitude in June is intense. SPF 50+ reapplied every 2 hours. The dry air makes it easy to miss early sunburn. Apply to ears and the back of your neck as well as your face.

Add a Safari After Your Summit
June is an excellent month for a post-climb safari. Wildlife viewing across the northern circuit — Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti, Tarangire — is at its best. The dry season concentrates wildlife around water sources, making June safaris exceptionally productive.
