Tanzania Visa & Entry Requirements for Kilimanjaro Climbers (2026)

Almost certainly yes. Kilimanjaro is in Tanzania, and most nationalities — including the UK, EU states, US, Canada, and Australia — need a tourist visa to enter Tanzania. The exceptions are mostly East African Community and select African and Caribbean passport holders. The visa is the only entry paperwork you handle yourself: park permits, crew registrations, and gate check-ins are all filed by us as your licensed operator. Apply online 2–4 weeks before you fly and the whole job takes about twenty minutes.

$50 for the ordinary single-entry tourist visa (up to 90 days), which covers most climbers. US citizens pay $100 and are issued a multiple-entry visa valid for up to 12 months — that is the standard arrangement for US passport holders, not an upsell. You will also want the multiple-entry visa if your trip crosses a border and returns — for example a Kenya safari between arrival and the climb. Pay by card on the official portal; the fee is the same whether you apply online in advance or queue for a visa on arrival, which is one of several reasons to do it online.

Go to the official Tanzania Immigration portal — visa.immigration.go.tz — and ignore any lookalike agency sites that charge service fees on top. Create an application, choose the ordinary visa (or multiple-entry if you are a US passport holder or crossing borders), upload your passport bio page, a passport-style photo, and your return flight booking, then pay by card. Approval typically arrives by email within about 10 days. Print the approval or save it offline on your phone — you will show it at the JRO immigration desk on arrival. Apply 2–4 weeks before departure: early enough for delays, late enough that nothing expires.

Visa on arrival remains available at JRO for eligible nationalities at the same fee — but we recommend the e-visa every time. The arrival queue for visas can add an hour after a long-haul flight, card machines at the desk occasionally fail, and any document hiccup is far easier to fix from your sofa than from an immigration counter at midnight. If you do arrive without a visa, have the fee available and expect to wait; your driver will still be outside whenever you emerge — we track every arrival.

Only if your routing exposes you to a yellow fever endemic country. Tanzania requires the certificate (the ICVP yellow card) from travellers over 1 year old arriving from a WHO-listed endemic country — and, critically, from anyone who transits more than 12 hours through an endemic country's airport. In practice this catches climbers with long layovers in Nairobi or Addis Ababa. Direct routings via Amsterdam, Doha, Istanbul, or other non-endemic hubs do not trigger the requirement. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date in Tanzania and have at least one blank page — check the expiry date today, because renewals take weeks. At the JRO immigration desk you may also be asked for proof of onward travel (your return ticket) and sufficient funds; your climb confirmation covers the purpose-of-visit question. Keep printed or offline phone copies of your e-visa approval, return flights, and our booking confirmation. After the desk, you collect your bags and walk out to our driver — airport pickup is included in every climb, so the paperwork is genuinely the last thing you handle alone.
