Kilimanjaro Permits
Every climber on Kilimanjaro needs a permit issued by TANAPA — Tanzania National Parks. This guide explains exactly how the permit system works, what fees apply, and what you need to arrange with your operator.
What's Included in Your Package
Kilimanjaro National Park entrance fee
Summit (rescue fee) — mandatory for all climbers
Camping fees for every night on the mountain
Crew permits — guide, assistant guide, and porter entry fees
Gate registration and check-in
Summit certificate (awarded on successful ascent)
VAT and all government levies
Conservation fee
How the Permit Process Works
TANAPA requires that all Kilimanjaro climbers enter the park through a licensed Tanzanian tour operator. Independent permits for solo climbers are not available — you cannot simply show up at the gate and purchase a permit yourself.
This means every Kilimanjaro climb must be booked through an operator like Mount Kilimanjaro Climb. We register your climb, submit your details to TANAPA, pay all fees in advance, and collect your permits before you reach the gate. On the day, our guides check you in — there are no queues or forms to complete on your side.
The rescue fee (sometimes listed separately as a “summit fee”) is mandatory for all climbers and covers emergency evacuation services operated by KINAPA (Kilimanjaro National Park Authority). It is automatically included in your package — this is non-negotiable and applies to every operator.

What Do Kilimanjaro Permits Cost?
TANAPA fees are set by the Tanzanian government and are subject to change. As of 2026–2027, the approximate fee structure is:
| Fee Type | Per Person (USD) |
|---|---|
| Park Entrance Fee | $70 / day |
| Rescue / Summit Fee | $60 total |
| Camping Fee | $50 / night |
| Hut Fee (Marangu only) | $60 / night |
| Guide Entry Fee | $2 / day |
| Porter Entry Fee | $2 / day |
All fees are included in Mount Kilimanjaro Climb package pricing. You will never be surprised by an additional charge at the gate.
Permit Questions
Can I get a Kilimanjaro permit without a tour operator?
No. TANAPA does not issue permits to independent climbers. Every climber must enter the park with a licensed Tanzanian tour operator. This rule exists for safety reasons — all climbers must have registered guides and evacuation cover.
Do I need any documents to get a permit?
Yes. We require a scan of your passport (photo page) and a completed health declaration form at the time of booking. No additional documents are needed from you — we handle everything with TANAPA.
Can I book a permit directly with TANAPA?
No. Permits can only be booked through licensed operators. You cannot pre-register with TANAPA yourself. This is a fixed government requirement.
What happens to permits if I cancel?
Permit fees paid to TANAPA are non-refundable. Our cancellation policy reflects this — once permits have been submitted (typically 48–72 hours before your start date), permit costs cannot be recovered. We recommend travel insurance that covers cancellation.
Are children under 18 allowed?
TANAPA permits Kilimanjaro climbs for those aged 10 and above. Climbers under 18 require a signed parental consent form. We have guided family groups successfully on the mountain — route selection matters significantly for younger climbers.
