Route Comparison FAQs
Which Kilimanjaro route has the highest summit success rate?
The Northern Circuit and Lemosho have the best acclimatisation profiles. Both routes spend 8–9 days on the mountain, giving your body maximum time to acclimatize. Northern Circuit circles the entire mountain; Lemosho is the most popular premium route. Machame is the scenic alternative with 7–8 days.
Which route is cheapest?
Marangu is the cheapest route at $1,406 early bird (5-day from $1,406, 6-day from $1,596). The catch: the 5-day Marangu has only a the only hut-based route (no wild camping). Budget operators offering Marangu under $1,400 typically cut corners on guide ratios, food quality, and safety equipment. Always take the 6-day option if choosing Marangu.
Which Kilimanjaro route is easiest?
Marangu and Rongai are the easiest routes — both rated moderate difficulty. Marangu has the advantage of hut accommodation (no tents), making it more comfortable. Rongai approaches from the quieter northern/Kenya side. Neither is technically demanding, but altitude is always a challenge on Kili regardless of terrain.
Which route is most crowded?
Machame is the most crowded route — it's the most popular path up Kilimanjaro and can feel busy at camps and on the summit push. Northern Circuit is the least crowded (1/5) — only ~3% of climbers take it. Lemosho and Rongai also have light traffic since they approach from the western and northern sides respectively.
What is the hardest Kilimanjaro route?
Umbwe is the hardest route — rated 5/5 for difficulty. It's the shortest and steepest, with very little time for acclimatization (75–80% summit rate). The steep Umbwe Gate start is physically demanding. Machame is considered the second hardest due to the Barranco Wall scramble, but its 7–8 day timeline provides better acclimatization than Umbwe.
Should I choose Machame or Lemosho?
Choose Lemosho if summit success is your priority (the longest acclimatisation profile of any Kili route vs a strong southern-route acclimatisation profile). Choose Machame if scenery is your priority — the Barranco Wall, Shira Plateau, and glacial valleys are extraordinary. Both are 7–8 days. Lemosho is $190 more (8 days vs 7), but its extra day at the Shira Plateau dramatically improves acclimatization. If you have the budget, Lemosho is the better choice.
Which route is best for first-time climbers?
Lemosho or Machame are the best choices for first-timers. Lemosho offers the highest summit success rate and a gradual start through remote rainforest. Machame offers the most scenic daily experience. Both have 7–8 day timelines, which is the sweet spot for first-timers: enough time to acclimatize without being excessively long. Avoid Umbwe and 5-day Marangu as a first climb.
What is the Shira Plateau route?
The Shira Route is a less-visited western approach to Kilimanjaro. Climbers start from Shira Gate (3,600m) — higher than other routes, meaning the first day's acclimatisation pressure is reduced. It joins the Lemosho route at Shira Plateau Camp and is considered moderate difficulty. See our dedicated Shira Plateau guide for full details.
What is the Western Breach route on Kilimanjaro?
The Western Breach is an optional ascent path on the Shira and Lemosho routes — a steep, scree-filled climb up the western flank of Kibo crater. It's more technical than other Kili routes and is only recommended for experienced trekkers. It avoids the crowded Barafu Camp summit night. See our Western Breach route guide for the full logistics.
What is Crater Camp on Kilimanjaro?
Crater Camp is an optional overnight stay at ~5,800m inside the volcanic crater of Kilimanjaro — the highest overnight camp in Africa. Climbers on the Northern Circuit and Lemosho routes can add Crater Camp as a final night before the summit push, waking up minutes from Uhuru Peak. It's an extraordinary experience for those seeking the most remote Kili night possible. See our Crater Camp guide.
Are there other routes not listed here?
Yes — Kilimanjaro has more routes than the six mainstream options. The Shira Route, Western Breach option, and Kilema Route are all legitimate approaches with lower climber volumes. Ask Don which route best matches your fitness level and dates — especially for last-minute bookings where route availability varies.
Are there other Kilimanjaro routes beyond the 6 main ones?
Yes. The Shira Route (now rarely operated as a standalone starting point) approaches via the western side through the Shira Plateau — it's the same initial ascent as Lemosho but starts higher. The Kilema Route is a quiet eastern approach with minimal traffic. The Western Breach is a technical variation up the Ararat Breach route used by expedition climbers — it's not a stand-alone commercial route but an ascent option for experienced climbers. Crater Camp refers to sleeping inside the caldera at crater rim, typically combined with the Northern Circuit or Western Breach approach.
What is the Shira Plateau route on Kilimanjaro?
The Shira Plateau is the high western plateau of Kilimanjaro that Lemosho and the old Shira route both traverse. It sits at 3,500–3,900m and offers extraordinary views of the Kibo crater and surrounding glaciers. The Shira Route (now largely folded into the Lemosho itinerary) began with a drive to 3,500m, skipping the lower rainforest — this meant faster altitude gain and a lower summit success rate, which is why Lemosho replaced it. Read our full Shira Plateau guide for the current itinerary approach.
What is the Western Breach route on Kilimanjaro?
The Western Breach is a technical ascent route up Kilimanjaro's western face — the same route used on the first ascent in 1889. It requires scrambling over large boulders and is not suitable for most commercial climbers. It is typically combined with an overnight at Crater Camp (inside the caldera at ~5,700m). The Western Breach is exclusively for experienced climbers and is offered as part of select expedition itineraries, not standard commercial climbs.
Can you sleep inside Kilimanjaro's crater?
Yes — Crater Camp at ~5,700m is the only legal overnight camping inside Kilimanjaro's caldera. It is combined with the Northern Circuit or Western Breach approach and adds a extraordinary night at altitude. The camp is basic (no facilities), and the altitude at this elevation makes sleeping difficult. Summit success from Crater Camp requires excellent acclimatization and fitness. See our Crater Camp page for the full expedition itinerary.
