Kilimanjaro Cell Service & Internet
Will your phone work on the mountain? Here's the honest breakdown — zone by zone, provider by provider.
The Short Answer
Your phone will work on Kilimanjaro — but only in certain zones, and only with the right provider. Summit and upper mountain have no coverage. Base camps have intermittent signal. Lower slopes have reliable coverage.
WiFi on Kilimanjaro does not exist outside of a few high-end lodges at the base. Do not expect to stream, video call, or upload photos from the mountain.
Cell Coverage by Zone
Trailhead / Moshi / Arusha
Full 4G coverage
All Tanzanian providers (Vodacom, Tigo, Airtel) have strong signal. Most hotels and lodges have WiFi.
Rainforest Zone (0–2,800m)
Good 3G/4G signal
Vodacom and Tigo have reliable coverage through the lower rainforest. Airtel is less consistent in this zone.
Heath / Moorland Zone (2,800–4,000m)
Spotty 2G/3G signal
Some phones get occasional bars. Do not rely on it. Text messages may occasionally get through on Vodacom.
Alpine Desert (4,000–5,000m)
No signal
No cellular coverage. This is the zone between base camps and the summit. You are completely off-grid.
Summit Zone (5,000m+)
No signal
Uhuru Peak and the crater rim have zero coverage. Summit night is entirely off-grid.
Which Provider Is Best?
If you're bringing a Tanzanian SIM card, Vodacom has the best overall coverage on Kilimanjaro. Tigo is reasonable in lower zones. Airtel is the weakest on the mountain.
For international travellers, roaming agreements vary. Most European and North American carriers have at least partial roaming on Vodacom. Check with your provider before departure.
Recommendation
Buy a local Vodacom SIM card at Kilimanjaro Airport (or in Moshi). It costs under $5 and gives you the best chance of signal at camp. Your guide can help you set this up on arrival.
WiFi on the Mountain
There is no WiFi on Kilimanjaro's trails or camps. A few operators market "satellite WiFi" as a premium add-on — this uses the Iridium satellite network and is expensive (~$150–300 for the duration). Mount Kilimanjaro Climb does not currently offer this as standard.
At the base of the mountain, Kilimanjaro Terrawe Camp and some Marangu hotels offer WiFi — but the moment you enter the park, you're offline.
What About Family and Friends Tracking You?
This is the most common concern. Your family wants to know you're safe — especially on summit night. Here's the practical reality:
- ✓Daily check-ins via your guide's radio: Your guide radios to base camp each morning. Base camp can relay messages. Ask your booking coordinator to set up a daily "I'm OK" protocol with your family.
- ✓SMS at camp (when signal is available): At camps in lower zones (especially Mti Mkubwa on Lemosho, and Horombo on Marangu), you may get brief signal for texts. Don't count on it — but it's worth checking.
- ✓Satellite messenger devices: Garmin inReach, Zoleo, and SPOT devices work independently of cell networks. They allow two-way texting and GPS tracking via satellite. Many climbers rent these. Mount Kilimanjaro Climb can arrange rental on request.
- ✓Post climb: As soon as you return to Moshi or Arusha, full signal returns immediately.
Charging on the Mountain
Most camps have solar charging stations where you can charge devices for a small fee (~$5–10 per device per day). Battery performance drops significantly in cold temperatures — keep phones and power banks in your sleeping bag at night.
Bring a power bank of at least 20,000mAh. A fully charged power bank will keep your phone alive for summit night without access to a charging station.
Stay Connected Where Possible
The mountain is intentionally off-grid. That is part of the experience. But we understand the need for family peace of mind. Let us arrange a satellite messenger device for your climb.
