Kilimanjaro Park Fees 2026

The exact 2026 TANAPA park fees for Kilimanjaro — park entry, camping, crater, and rescue fees broken down by route and duration.

By Mount Kilimanjaro Climb — 10 min read · Updated May 2026 — reflects $70/day TANAPA rate

2026 Fee Update — What Changed From 2025

TANAPA increased the park entry fee from $60/day to $70/day effective January 2026. This page reflects the current 2026 rates. If you have quotes from an operator using 2025 pricing, demand a revised breakdown.

The camping fee ($50/night) and crater fee ($100) are unchanged from 2025. The rescue fee ($20) is also unchanged.

Park fees are the most predictable — and most frequently misunderstood — cost on Kilimanjaro. Unlike operator pricing, which varies widely between companies, TANAPA park fees are standardised across all operators. This page gives you the exact 2026 figures so you can budget accurately and spot operators who are under-quoting on park fees to win your booking.

Complete Park Fee Breakdown by Route

The table below shows the estimated total park fees for a solo climber on each route in 2026. Fees are calculated using the standard TANAPA rate of $70/day park entry plus $50/night camping. Hut routes (Marangu) use lower accommodation fees. Your operator quotes a group rate, which typically reduces the per-person park fees slightly.

RouteDaysPark EntryAccommodationCrater FeeRescueTotal Est.
Marangu (5 days)5$350$30 (huts)$0*$20~$400
Marangu (6 days)6$420$36 (huts)$0*$20~$476
Rongai (6 days)6$420$250 (camping)$100$20~$790
Machame (7 days)7$490$300 (camping)$100$20~$910
Lemosho (8 days)8$560$350 (camping)$100$20~$1,030
Northern Circuit (9 days)9$630$400 (camping)$100$20~$1,150
Umbwe (6 days)6$420$250 (camping)$100$20~$790

*Marangu huts: the standard ascent via Gilman's Point does not enter the crater zone. Climbers who deviate to walk the crater rim or visit Furtwangler Glacier pay the $100 crater fee. Hut fee is approximately $40/night per person. Figures are per person for solo climbers; group bookings reduce per-person park fees slightly.

What Each Park Fee Covers

Park Entry Fee — $70/day

The park entry fee is charged for each calendar day you spend inside Kilimanjaro National Park. This is non-negotiable and applies to all routes. It covers: park maintenance, trail upkeep, ranger stations, signposted paths, litter management, and conservation programmes.

Note: The day you enter AND the day you exit both count as full days. A 7-day climb typically spans 8 calendar days, so park fees are calculated on 8 days at $70/day.

Camping Fee — $50/night

Applies to all tented routes: Lemosho, Machame, Rongai, Northern Circuit, and Umbwe. The camping fee covers the use of designated campsite areas, ablution facilities, and waste management.

Marangu exception: Marangu uses mountain huts rather than campsites. Hut fees are approximately $40/night per person in shared dormitory rooms. Huts have solar-powered lighting and basic beds — but no heating and temperatures at altitude still drop below freezing.

Crater Fee — $100 (one-time)

The crater zone is the area above 5,000 metres — including Uhuru Peak, the Furtwangler Glacier, and the crater floor. TANAPA introduced the crater fee in 2021 to fund conservation efforts in this zone.

Who pays it: Climbers on Lemosho, Machame, Rongai, Northern Circuit, and Umbwe all enter the crater zone on summit night. Marangu climbers via Gilman's Point generally do not — but if you choose to walk the crater rim or descend to the crater floor, the fee applies.

Rescue Fee — $20 (one-time)

The rescue fee funds the Kilimanjaro National Park rescue team. This covers emergency evacuations, helicopter medevac coordination (when weather permits), and search-and-rescue operations. Every climber pays this regardless of route.

Does not cover: Private rescue services, medical treatment at hospitals, or evacuation by your tour operator's own staff. It specifically funds TANAPA's official rescue operations through the park authority.

How Park Fees Affect Your Total Cost

Park fees typically represent 25-40% of your total Kilimanjaro climbing cost — but they are the one component you cannot avoid or reduce by choosing a different operator. Here is how they stack up against the total budget:

Cost ComponentTypical RangeNotes
Park fees (all-in)$400-$1,150Varies by route and duration

How to Use This Page When Comparing Operators

Ask any operator you are considering to provide a breakdown of park fees in their quote, and request copies of the official TANAPA receipts. Be suspicious of operators who quote you a total without itemising park fees separately — or who quote park fees that seem too low compared to the table above.

Mount Kilimanjaro Climb provides full transparency on park fees. Our quotes show the exact TANAPA fees we pay on your behalf, and we provide the official receipts. No markups, no surprises.

2025 vs 2026 Fee Changes

TANAPA reviews Kilimanjaro park fees annually. The 2026 fees reflect an increase in the park entry fee from $60/day to $70/day, along with adjustments to camping and crater fees. The previous increase was from $50/day to $60/day in 2022. The route-by-route breakdown above accurately reflects current 2026 pricing.

Group Discounts and Special Categories

Groups of 6+

TANAPA offers a discounted per-person park entry rate for organised groups of 6 or more climbers booking together. The discount is typically 10-15% off the standard per-day rate. Your operator should apply for this group rate and pass the saving on to you.

Children and Teenagers

Children under 5 years old: free. Children aged 5-15: 50% of standard park entry fee. Teenagers aged 15-18: standard rates apply. Children under 10 are generally not recommended for Kilimanjaro due to altitude risk, regardless of fitness level.

Tanzanian Residents

Tanzania residents (with valid residence permit) pay substantially reduced park fees — approximately 75% less than international rates. If you are a Tanzanian resident planning a Kilimanjaro climb, ask your operator to apply the resident rate.

Volunteer and Research Groups

Groups conducting research or conservation work on Kilimanjaro may apply to TANAPA for fee reductions or fee waivers. Applications must be submitted at least 60 days before the planned climb and require documentation from an accredited research institution.

How and When to Pay Park Fees

Park fees are paid through your registered tour operator directly to TANAPA at the park gate on the first day of your climb. You should receive an official TANAPA receipt showing the breakdown of all fees paid. Do not accept verbal confirmation of fees — the receipt is your proof of payment and is required if you need to make any claim or dispute during your climb.

TANAPA accepts payment in USD cash and major credit cards at park gates. Some smaller gates have limited card processing capability — carrying $200-$300 in cash as a backup is standard practice among experienced operators.
