Pre-Climb Logistics
Where to Stay Before Kilimanjaro
Moshi vs Arusha — and why your guide will meet you in Moshi, not Arusha. The exact hotel picks by budget, the shuttle timings that matter, and what the corporate operators will not tell you.
Your guide will meet you in Moshi. Not Arusha. Here is exactly why that matters — and where to book your hotel accordingly.
Moshi vs Arusha in One Paragraph
Moshi is a Kilimanjaro town. At 890 metres altitude, with Mount Kilimanjaro visible on clear mornings, it is where every climbing operator runs from — and where your guide will run the briefing the night before you start. From Moshi, it takes 45 minutes to 1.5 hours to reach any of the six park gates, depending on the route.
Arusha is a safari hub. It sits at 1,400 metres, 2.5 to 3 hours from Moshi by road, and is the departure point for Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro, and the Serengeti. If you are combining a climb with a safari, Arusha makes sense — but as a base for climbing Kilimanjaro, it is the wrong town.
The standard climb itinerary is: fly into JRO → 30-minute transfer to Moshi → night in a Moshi hotel → 0600–0700 departure to your gate → climb begins. Any itinerary that puts you in Arusha the night before a climb adds 2.5 hours of road travel to a day that already starts at altitude.
Why Moshi Is the Correct Base for a Kilimanjaro Climb
Operator HQ
Every climbing operator on Kilimanjaro — including us — is headquartered in Moshi. Your pre-climb briefing happens at the operator's office, usually within walking distance of your hotel. In Arusha, you would need to travel back to Moshi for this.
- ✓ Gear shops walkable from operator offices
- ✓ Guide briefing at operator HQ night before climb
- ✓ All logistics coordinated from a single town
Altitude Advantage
Moshi sits at 890m. Your first gate — Machame Gate — is at 1,800m. That 910m gain in 45 minutes is a manageable introduction to altitude. Arusha at 1,400m and a 2.5-hour transfer to the same gate means your body is working harder before the climb has even started.
- ✓ 890m first night = gentler altitude introduction
- ✓ Full night's sleep before 0600 departure
- ✓ No early-morning 2.5-hour road transfer to the gate
Climber-Catered Restaurants in Moshi
Moshi has restaurants specifically used by climbing operators for pre-climb dinners. Happy Dog and Kili Stone are two names that come up repeatedly in guide briefings — reliable food, climber-friendly portions, and locations that work with early evening start times. These are not tourist traps; they are where people who know the mountain eat.
Arusha's restaurant scene is more diverse, but none of it is designed around the pre-climb dinner-and-early-sleep schedule that gives you the best chance on summit night.

Summit night — always Moshi, never at the gate
No matter which hotel you choose, the night before your summit attempt is spent in Moshi. Machame Gate at 1,800m has no accommodation worth staying in. Climbers who try to sleep at the gate or in the village nearby consistently report worse summit outcomes due to cold, noise, and altitude.
Shuttle Timing Reference
These are the transfers that govern every Kilimanjaro climb itinerary. Memorise them or bookmark this page — your hotel booking and flight arrival time depend on them.
| Route | Duration | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| JRO Airport → Moshi | 30 minutes | Standard included transfer. Most operators offer this free as part of the climb package. |
| Moshi → Machame Gate | 60 minutes | Departs 0600–0700 = gate arrival 0700–0800. Book hotels near the main road for easiest pickup. |
| Moshi → Marangu Gate | 90 minutes | Longest gate transfer. Departure is still 0600–0700 to meet the 0800 park opening window. |
| Moshi → Lemosho Gate | 60–75 minutes | Road is rougher in sections. Some operators use 4WD for this transfer. |
| Moshi → Rongai Gate | 2 hours | Farthest northern gate. Departure may be 0530 to allow for the longer transfer. |
| JRO Airport → Arusha | 2–2.5 hours | NOT a climbing base. Only relevant if your safari starts in Arusha. |
Green = standard climb transfer · Orange = longer but manageable · Red = not recommended as a climb base
