Kilimanjaro in April and May — The Rainy Season
The honest case for and against. Who should go. Who should wait.
What the Long Rains Actually Mean
April and May are Tanzania's long rains season. For Kilimanjaro, this means daily rain in the forest zone (1,800m to 2,800m), persistent cloud, muddy trails, and significantly reduced views on the lower mountain. The upper mountain — above 4,000m — is less affected. The alpine desert and summit zones are not dramatically different from other months. The long rains sit in the atmosphere below, not above.
The challenge is not the summit — it is the two days getting there. Arriving at high camp cold, wet, and physically taxed from muddy lower trails leaves less in reserve for summit night.
The Case Against April and May
Daily rain in the forest zone — wet boots and gear from Day 1
Trails become muddy and slippery, particularly on descents
Cloud reduces summit views even on successful climbs
Lower summit success rates — rain fatigue compounds with altitude
Some routes (Marangu, Umbwe) become genuinely hazardous in heavy rain
Overall experience is harder than the same route in dry season
The Case For April and May
Lowest crowds of any month — entire campsites to yourself
The forest zone is at its most lush and intensely green
Above 4,000m, conditions are not dramatically different from dry season
Some operators offer reduced prices to fill April and May departures
For experienced trekkers with proper waterproof gear, it is entirely manageable
Rongai Route on the northern side avoids most of the rain
Who Should Consider April or May
April and May work for a specific type of climber: experienced trekkers who have done multi-day mountain treks in wet conditions, have excellent waterproof gear, are physically strong, and genuinely cannot travel in July, August, or January. If you fit this description and understand what you are signing up for, the northern Rongai Route in late April or May can deliver a remarkable, solitary experience.
First-time high-altitude trekkers, those who have not trekked in sustained rain, and anyone who wants clear summit views should choose a different month.
Route Recommendation for April and May
The Rongai Route approaches from the north, near the Kenya border. The northern slopes are in the rain shadow of the main mountain, receiving a fraction of the rainfall that southern routes experience during the long rains. Rongai in April or May is a materially different experience from Machame or Lemosho in the same period. The 7-day itinerary provides solid acclimatization.
The Secret: Late April and May Are Excellent for Safari
If you are considering April or May for a Tanzania trip, here is what most operators will not tell you: late April and May are exceptional months for a Tanzania safari — even while the mountain is wet.
Green season wildlife viewing is underrated
April and May are the heart of Tanzania's green season. The Serengeti and Ngorongoro are lush, wildlife is dispersed across wider areas, and predator sightings are actually more frequent because animals concentrate around water sources. The calving season (January-March) is over, but the wildlife density remains high.
Fewer tourists, lower prices
April and May are the lowest-season months for Tanzanian tourism. Lodge and camp prices drop 20-40% compared to peak July-August rates. Parks are nearly empty. A private safari in late April can cost significantly less than the same itinerary in August — while the wildlife experience is equally remarkable.
The Ndutu and Ngorongoro combination
April is the end of the calving season in the Ndutu region (southern Serengeti / Ngorongoro border). Late April clients have reported extraordinary predator sightings as the herds begin their annual migration north. Ngorongoro Crater is excellent year-round.
The real recommendation
Consider climbing Kilimanjaro in June when the dry season returns, and pairing it with a late April or May safari in the same year. You get the best of both windows — prime climbing conditions in June-July, and green-season safari value in April-May — and the price difference versus peak-season booking is meaningful.
Rainy Season Kilimanjaro — Common Questions
Can you climb Kilimanjaro in April or May 2026?
Yes — the mountain remains open year-round. But conditions are at their most challenging. Heavy daily rain in the forest zone, muddy trails, reduced views, and lower summit success rates. Rongai Route on the northern slopes holds up significantly better than southern routes.
What are the advantages of April or May for a Tanzania trip?
The honest answer: the climbing is harder but the safari is excellent. Late April and May offer superb green-season wildlife viewing, dramatically lower prices, and near-empty parks. If your goal is a Tanzania experience with maximum wildlife value, April-May safaris are outstanding and the climbing difficulty is manageable if you choose Rongai.
What is the summit success rate in April and May?
Lower than dry season. Rain fatigue from the lower slopes compounds with altitude on summit night. Guides report that climbers who arrive wet and cold at high camp have less in reserve. Rongai climbers in April-May perform significantly better than southern route climbers in the same period.
Should I combine a rainy season climb with a safari?
Yes — and this is actually one of the better combos in the Tanzania calendar. Climb Kilimanjaro in late April or May (choose Rongai), recover in Arusha for a day, then do a safari in the Serengeti or Ngorongoro. The parks are green, wildlife is excellent, and you avoid the peak-season safari crush of July-August at significantly lower cost.
