Western Breach

Crater Camp + Dramatic Western Descent

The most complete Kilimanjaro experience: 7 days ascending via the Northern Circuit, a night at Crater Camp (5,730m), then the Western Breach — steep volcanic gullies and dramatic cliff views on the descent. A true circuit of Africa's highest peak.

Why "Climb High, Sleep Low" Works

On acclimatization days, you ascend to a higher altitude (triggering your body to produce more oxygen-carrying red blood cells), then descend to sleep at a lower elevation where recovery is easier. By summit day, your blood carries significantly more oxygen — the difference between reaching Uhuru Peak and turning back.

The Full Circuit

Summit from Inside the Crater.
Descend Through the Western Breach.

The Northern Circuit is Kilimanjaro's highest-success route. Adding Crater Camp makes it extraordinary. Adding the Western Breach makes it complete — a true circuit of the mountain, descending through terrain that fewer than 500 climbers per year ever see.

5,730m

Crater Camp Altitude

Sleep inside Kilimanjaro's active caldera — the highest overnight camp in Africa. Limited to 4 climbers per night.

2,300m

Western Breach Drop

Lose over 2,300m of altitude in a single day — descending the dramatic volcanic gullies of Kilimanjaro's western face.

The Descent

Why the Western Breach Is Worth It

The Terrain Is Extraordinary

The Western Breach descends through a landscape unlike anything else on Kilimanjaro — steep volcanic gullies carved into the western face, ancient lava flows, and cliff walls that drop away to the plains far below. You are walking through the mountain's geological history.

A True Circuit

Most Kilimanjaro routes are out-and-back: you ascend one side and descend the same way. The Northern Circuit + Western Breach is a true circuit — you enter via Londorossi Gate in the west and exit via Shira Gate, also in the west, having walked around the mountain.

Fewer Than 500 Climbers Per Year

The Northern Circuit receives a fraction of the traffic of Machame or Marangu. The Western Breach descent is even rarer — most operators use the Mweka Route. When you descend through the Breach, you are in terrain that very few people have walked.

No Technical Climbing Required

Despite looking dramatic from below, the Western Breach requires no climbing gear, no ropes, and no technical skills. It is a steep hike — demanding on the legs and knees — but achievable for any fit hiker who has successfully reached the summit.

Day by Day

10-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Arusha → Londorossi Gate → Big Tree Camp

1,400m → 2,790m9 km4–5 hrs

Morning pickup in Arusha. Drive 2.5 hours to Londorossi Gate on Kilimanjaro's western slopes. Meet your full crew — lead guide, assistant guides, cook, and porters. Register and begin. The trail enters dense montane rainforest immediately — mossy, atmospheric. Arrive at Big Tree Camp by late afternoon.

Day 2

Big Tree Camp → Shira 1 Camp

2,790m → 3,500m7 km3–5 hrs

Rise through the heather zone onto the Shira Plateau. Open moorland with views of Kibo cone appearing through the mist. The plateau is vast and rarely visited — often just your team for miles. Tonight you sleep at Shira 1, one of the most scenic camps on the mountain.

Day 3

Shira 1 → Shira 2 Camp + Shira Cathedral

3,500m → 3,840m9 km4–6 hrs

Move to Shira 2 Camp. Afternoon acclimatization hike to Shira Cathedral (3,962m) — a dramatic volcanic rock formation. The 'climb high, sleep low' technique gives your body its first major altitude adaptation opportunity before the critical Lava Tower day.

Day 4

Shira 2 → Lava Tower (4,600m) → Moir Hut

3,840m → 4,600m → 4,200m11 km6–8 hrs

The most critical acclimatization day on Kilimanjaro. Climb to Lava Tower at 4,600m — your highest point of the ascent so far. The altitude stress that defeats unprepared climbers on shorter routes is largely absent because of this day. Descend to Moir Hut to sleep. The push-and-recover profile is the single most important day for summit success.

Day 5

Moir Hut → Third Cave Camp

4,200m → 3,870m10 km4–6 hrs

Enter Kilimanjaro's northern wilderness — the quietest, most remote section of the mountain. The trail traverses open moorland terrain that fewer than 5% of all Kilimanjaro climbers ever see. No crowds. No noise. Just the mountain.

Day 6

Third Cave Camp → School Hut

3,870m → 4,750m9 km5–7 hrs

Significant altitude gain today, approaching from the east through open scree. School Hut sits beneath Mawenzi's dramatic peak — spectacular views of both Kibo and Mawenzi simultaneously. Rest, hydrate, eat well. Tomorrow is the last camp before your summit push.

Day 7

School Hut → Kibo Huts (rest day)

4,750m → 4,700m4 km2 hrs

Short walk to Kibo Huts for final rest. Eat heavily. Sleep by 7 PM. By now your body has had 6 full days of gradual altitude exposure — the Northern Circuit's biggest advantage. Your summit window opens at midnight.

Day 8

Kibo Huts → Uhuru Peak → Crater Camp (5,730m)

4,700m → 5,895m → 5,730m14 km12–15 hrs

Midnight departure for the summit. Watch the sunrise from Uhuru Peak — rooftop of Africa. Then descend into the caldera for the night at Crater Camp. This is the highest overnight camp in Africa, limited to 4 climbers. The silence inside the crater at 5,730m is unlike anything you have experienced.

Day 9

Crater Camp → Western Breach → Shira Camp

5,730m → 3,400m12 km7–9 hrs

The Western Breach descent begins. Leave Crater Camp after breakfast and descend into the caldera before traversing the western flank of Kibo. The Western Breach — a series of steep volcanic gullies and benches — delivers you to the Shira Plateau. The terrain is extraordinary: steep cliff faces, ancient lava flows, and vast views across the western slopes. You lose over 2,300m of altitude in a single day.

Day 10

Shira Camp → Shira Gate → Arusha

3,400m → 2,100m → 1,400m14 km4–5 hrs + drive

Final descent through the Shira Plateau, moorland, and back into the rainforest zone. Complete the circuit by exiting at Shira Gate on the western side of the mountain — a different gate from where most routes begin. Transfer back to Arusha. Summit dinner and celebration.

The Complete Kilimanjaro Circuit

Ten days. One summit from inside the crater. One night at the highest camp in Africa. One descent through the Western Breach. This is the full Kilimanjaro.
