Northern Circuit Route in March
March is a gamble — early month is fine, late month is not.
What to Expect in March
The first two weeks of March share February's conditions. By mid-month, Tanzania's long rains typically begin. The change can be abrupt. If your climb starts before March 10 and finishes before March 20, you're likely fine. If you're flexible, schedule to avoid late March entirely. Trails become muddy, clouds obscure views, and summit success rates drop as altitude combines with wet, cold conditions.
Northern Circuit Route — specific note
The Northern Circuit is 9–10 days — too long to manage well in the rainy season. If you need to climb in April or May, consider Rongai (shorter, drier approach) instead.
Our verdict
Early March is acceptable. Late March: avoid. If flexible, choose February or January instead.
Northern Circuit Route
Full circumnavigation. Maximum acclimatization. Least crowded. Highest success rate on Kilimanjaro.
