What to Expect in May

Early May continues the long rains pattern from April. By mid-May the transition begins to become noticeable, particularly on the northern slopes. By the final week of May — particularly from May 25 onward — the shift can be abrupt and dramatic. Climbers finishing on the Rongai or Northern Circuit routes from May 28 report conditions that can rival February in terms of clarity. The mountain is still technically in its wet window, but the dry season's arrival is predictable and imminent. For safari: the Great Migration herds begin their long movement north from the Ndutu plains in May. This is the start of one of the world's great wildlife spectacles — the journey toward the Mara River crossings of July and August.

Our verdict

First half of May: still wet, avoid if possible. From May 20+: viable for experienced climbers. The transition is real — the dry season typically arrives by month's end. Excellent combined climb + safari window.
