Lemosho Route in April
April is Kilimanjaro's worst month — but late April can occasionally deliver.
What to Expect in April
The long rains are at full force in early-to-mid April. Trails are deeply muddy in the rainforest zone, low cloud cover obscures summit views, and success rates drop noticeably. If your climb starts in the last week of April, the pattern flips slightly — the rains begin to ease on the northern slopes in a way that experienced guides notice. We only recommend April for climbers with genuine schedule inflexibility, and we are transparent about what that means in practice. For safari: Tanzania's green season is underway — lush landscapes, dramatically fewer tourists, lower rates, excellent birding, and newborn wildlife in Ngorongoro. If the climb is secondary to the experience, the safari case for April is strong.
Our verdict
Avoid unless no flexibility. Late April (from ~25th): marginal improvement possible. Green season safari is a genuine alternative worth considering.
Lemosho Route
Remote start, outstanding scenery, best acclimatization profile. Our recommendation for first-timers.
