Pre-Climb Planning

Prepare for Kilimanjaro

Physical training, mental preparation, and everything you need to know before you climb.

How to Prepare for Mount Kilimanjaro

Start Early

We recommend beginning your physical training 12-16 weeks before your climb. Kilimanjaro success is not about intense fitness — it is about steady, deliberate preparation. See our 12-week training plan for a detailed day-by-day guide.

Cardiovascular Fitness

Build your aerobic base with running, cycling, hiking, or swimming. Aim for 4-5 sessions per week, 30-60 minutes each. The stronger your cardiovascular system, the better your body handles altitude.

Hiking with Elevation

Practice hiking on hills or mountains carrying a backpack. Start with 10-15 lbs and progress to 20+ lbs. This trains your body for the specific demands of climbing and acclimatization.

Strength Training

Leg strength is critical. Focus on squats, lunges, calf raises, and core work. Kilimanjaro descents are hard on the knees — building strength now prevents injury.

Mental Preparation

Kilimanjaro is as much mental as physical. Develop a positive mindset, practice self-talk, and prepare mentally for discomfort at altitude. Our guides will support you every step — but your mental resilience is what carries you to Uhuru Peak.

Acclimatization

All our routes include built-in acclimatization days. The longer routes (7-9 days) have higher success rates than rushed climbs. We recommend the Lemosho or Northern Circuit routes for best acclimatization.

Altitude Sickness Prevention

Most climbers experience mild altitude symptoms. Stay hydrated, eat well, and climb at a steady pace. If symptoms worsen, descend. Learn more about altitude sickness and when it requires medical attention.

Gear & Equipment

Bring quality hiking boots, layers for cold (summit is -20°C), a good sleeping bag, and a headlamp. We provide guides, porters, cook, and camp setup — you provide the physical and mental preparation.
