Our Recommendation

For most climbers: Machame. For specific situations: Rongai.

Machame is the right choice for 80% of climbers — better acclimatization profile, more scenic, and a 7-8 day itinerary that gives your body time to adjust. Rongai is the right choice if you want rainy-season climbing (drier northern approach), prefer fewer crowds, or are an experienced hiker who doesn't need the extra acclimatization day. The $230 price difference is real but not decisive.
