Machame vs Lemosho
"Should I climb Machame or Lemosho?" — The first question every serious Kili climber asks. Here is the definitive answer after 48 years and 2,000+ summits.
For most climbers: Lemosho — with one exception.
Lemosho wins on almost every metric: 97% vs 95% summit rate, lower crowds, better first three days, same summit path. The $605 difference is the cost of the extra acclimatization day. Choose Lemosho if you can take 8 days. Choose Machame if your schedule or budget genuinely cannot stretch beyond 7 days — it is an excellent route at 95%.

The Northern Approach: Rongai Route
The only route that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, starting at Rongai Gate near the Kenya border. Rongai sees far fewer climbers than Machame or Lemosho, offering a quieter, more remote experience — particularly on the ascent, where you may not encounter another group for hours.
Rongai at a Glance
Choose Rongai if:
- You want solitude — Rongai is the least trafficked popular route
- You are climbing during the rainy season (the north side is drier)
- You prefer a more gradual, less technical ascent
- You want a different perspective of the mountain that most climbers never see
Success rates vary by duration, acclimatization profile, and guide experience.
Choose Machame if:
- You have previous hiking/trekking experience
- Budget is a consideration ($200 saving)
- You can only take 7 days off work
- You want the most popular, well-supported trail
Choose Lemosho if:
- This is your first high-altitude climb
- You want the highest possible success rate
- Remote wilderness experience matters to you
- You can take 8 days — and want to use them well
