Kilimanjaro Crater Camp
Sleep inside the crater at 5,730m. The Western Breach approach. 10 days. Limited to 2 climbers per departure. The most exclusive Kilimanjaro experience in the world.
Crater Camp Elevation Profile
Daily elevation changes — visualizing the "Climb High, Sleep Low" acclimatization strategy
⚡Why "Climb High, Sleep Low" Works
On acclimatization days, you ascend to a higher altitude (triggering your body to produce more oxygen-carrying red blood cells), then descend to sleep at a lower elevation where recovery is easier. By summit day, your blood carries significantly more oxygen — the difference between reaching Uhuru Peak and turning back.
Inside the Volcano
The Only Overnight Camp Inside Kilimanjaro's Crater
Every standard Kilimanjaro route descends away from the summit caldera. The Crater Camp expedition does the opposite — it enters the caldera and camps at 5,730 metres, inside the volcano itself, metres from the Furtwangler Glacier and the residual lava dome.
There is no comparable experience in sub-Saharan Africa. Crater Camp at 5,730m is higher than the summit of Mount Elbrus. The air contains roughly 50% of the oxygen available at sea level. The stars from inside the crater are undistractable. Sunrise over the caldera rim — watched from inside the bowl — is a mountaineering memory that does not diminish with time.
Special park authorisation is required for overnight crater access. Mount Kilimanjaro Climb holds this authorisation and operates a limited number of Crater Camp departures each year — never more than two climbers per expedition.
Crater Camp at a Glance
The Western Breach
The Most Dramatic Route to the Summit
The Western Breach is not the easiest path to the top of Kilimanjaro — it is the most spectacular. Steep volcanic scree, exposed ridgelines, and the reward of the crater approach at dawn.
Inside the Crater
Rather than approaching the summit from the south (Barranco Wall), the Western Breach delivers you into the caldera itself. You see the summit dome from within the volcano that created it. No other standard route delivers this perspective.
Steeper, More Direct
The Western Breach rises sharply from the caldera floor to Gilman's Point, cutting a direct line toward Uhuru Peak. The scree descent from the summit back to Crater Camp is demanding but short — 2.2 km from peak to camp.
Fewer Crowds, Greater Solitude
Unlike the busy Southern Circuit routes, the Western Breach sees a tiny fraction of Kilimanjaro traffic. You will likely have the crater and the breach entirely to yourself. The mountain at this level belongs to you.
Crater Camp Expedition vs Standard Northern Circuit
Both use the Northern Circuit approach. The Crater Camp expedition replaces the final camp with an inside-crater camp and adds the Western Breach descent.

Days 1–6 follow the Northern Circuit approach to altitude. Day 7 is the crater entry. Day 8 is the summit push from inside the caldera.
Arusha — Londorossi Gate — Mti Mkubwa Camp
RainforestArusha hotel pickup. Registration at Londorossi Gate. Descend briefly then climb through dense rainforest to Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp. First night at altitude. Early dinner and rest.
Mti Mkubwa Camp — Shira 1 Camp
Heather / MoorlandClimb steadily through the heather zone onto the Shira Plateau. Views of Kibo cone appear for the first time. The plateau is vast and open. Shira 1 Camp sits on the moorland at 3,610m.
Shira 1 — Shira Cathedral — Moir Hut
Moorland / Alpine DesertMorning move to Shira 2 Camp, then afternoon acclimatisation hike to Shira Cathedral (3,962m). Classic climb-high-sleep-low pattern. Descend to Moir Hut at 4,200m. This is your first real altitude test.
Moir Hut — Lava Tower — Arrow Camp
Alpine DesertClimb to Lava Tower at 4,600m — the critical acclimatisation point. Your body is learning to produce red blood cells at altitude. Descend to Arrow Camp to sleep. By now you are well above 4,000m.
Arrow Camp — Northern Traverse — Third Cave Camp
Alpine Desert / Northern SlopesCross the northern traverse toward the east of the mountain. This is Kilimanjaro's most remote terrain — often no other groups for days. Enter the northern wilderness above 4,000m. Camp at Third Cave.
Third Cave Camp — School Hut
Alpine DesertSignificant altitude gain today as the trail climbs toward the eastern rim of the caldera. School Hut at 4,750m is your final camp before the summit push. Afternoon rest. High-calorie dinner. Sleep by 7 PM.
School Hut — Crater Camp (via Western Breach rim)
Arctic / Crater InteriorThe expedition proper begins. From School Hut, traverse the caldera rim toward the Western Breach. The approach is demanding — steep volcanic scree and rocky terrain above 5,000m. Enter the crater and make camp at 5,730m. You are now camping inside an active volcano.
Crater Camp — Uhuru Peak — Mweka Camp (Western Breach descent)
Arctic / Summit / DesertSummit night begins before dawn. From inside the crater, the rim is close — Gilman's Point at 5,715m, then Uhuru Peak at 5,895m. Sunrise inside the caldera is extraordinary. Descend via the Western Breach — steep scree fields — back to Crater Camp to collect gear, then on to Mweka Camp at 3,100m.
Mweka Camp — Mweka Gate — Arusha
RainforestFinal descent through the rainforest. Certificate ceremony at Mweka Gate. Your crater camp certificate is hand-signed by your lead guide. Transfer to Arusha. The expedition is complete.
Contingency / Buffer Day
RestBuilt-in contingency for weather delays or extended summit push. If not needed, use as a rest day in Arusha before international departure. Included at no extra cost.

Crater Camp Expedition — Frequently Asked
What is Kilimanjaro Crater Camp?
Crater Camp is a campsite located inside Kilimanjaro's caldera at approximately 5,730m — making it one of the highest overnight campsites in the world. Unlike all other Kilimanjaro routes where you sleep outside the crater, the Crater Camp expedition enters the caldera and camps inside the volcano itself, metres from the Furtwangler Glacier and lava dome.
What is the Western Breach on Kilimanjaro?
The Western Breach is a steeper, more direct approach to the summit of Kilimanjaro that cuts across the western rim of the caldera. It is more technically demanding than standard routes and involves traversing volcanic rock and scree at very high altitude. On the Crater Camp expedition it is used for the descent from the summit back toward Crater Camp.
How difficult is the Crater Camp Kilimanjaro expedition?
The Crater Camp expedition is significantly more demanding than standard Kilimanjaro routes. Sleeping at 5,730m places extreme altitude stress on the body. The Western Breach involves steep volcanic scree. This expedition is only suitable for experienced mountaineers with prior altitude experience above 4,500m.
Why is Crater Camp so much more expensive?
The premium pricing reflects three factors: special park permits for overnight crater access (rarely authorised), a 1:1 guide-to-climber ratio for safety at extreme altitude, and the logistical complexity of camping inside a protected caldera. The experience — sleeping inside an active volcano at 5,730m — is genuinely unique in world mountaineering.
What is the success rate for Crater Camp expeditions?
Mount Kilimanjaro Climb maintains an 87% summit success rate for Crater Camp expeditions. The rate is lower than standard Northern Circuit climbs because the additional altitude stress of sleeping inside the crater is physiologically demanding. Climbers who complete proper pre-acclimatisation significantly improve their odds.
What happens if I cannot continue the climb?
Your lead guide will make a safety assessment at each camp. If a climber cannot continue for any reason, the guide will descend with them to a safe altitude. Emergency evacuation support is included in the expedition price.
Is there a minimum age or fitness requirement?
Minimum age is 18. Fitness requirement is high: you should be able to sustain 6–8 hours of strenuous mountain trekking for multiple consecutive days at altitude. Prior multi-day trekking above 4,000m is required. We will ask about your experience before confirming a booking.
Can I combine Crater Camp with a safari?
Yes. Many Crater Camp summiteers extend their Tanzania trip with a private safari. Mount Kilimanjaro Climb can arrange this directly. For luxury safari experiences, we work with Magical Tanzania.
Only 2 Departures Still Available in 2026
