Crater Camp — Northern Circuit

Sleep Inside the Crater — 5,730m, the Highest Camp in Africa

The Northern Circuit summit approach — Kilimanjaro's highest-success route — with one extraordinary addition: after the summit, you descend into the caldera and sleep at Crater Camp (5,730m). The highest overnight camp in Africa. Limited to 4 climbers per night.

Why the Northern Circuit Approach

The Most Exclusive Night on Kilimanjaro

Every Kilimanjaro climber stands on Uhuru Peak. Fewer than 500 per year sleep inside the crater. The Northern Circuit approach is what makes it possible — 7 days of gradual altitude gain through remote wilderness, arriving at the summit with your body fully adapted. Then you descend into the caldera and sleep at 5,730 metres, surrounded by glaciers and volcanic formations, with the stars emerging over the rim above you.

5,730m

Camp Altitude

Highest overnight camp in Africa — inside the active caldera of Kilimanjaro, surrounded by glaciers and volcanic formations. You sleep 165m below the summit.

<500

Climbers Per Year

Fewer than 500 Kilimanjaro climbers per year reach Crater Camp. The permit is limited to 4 per night by TANAPA. This is genuinely exclusive.

95%+

Summit Success Rate

Same 7-day Northern Circuit approach as our standard expedition — proven altitude adaptation for nearly a full week before the summit push.

Northern Circuit: Best Acclimatisation

The Northern Circuit is Kilimanjaro's highest-success route because it gives your body the longest possible exposure to altitude before the summit push. Seven days of gradual ascent through remote northern wilderness — terrain that fewer than 5% of climbers ever see — means your red blood cells have time to adapt. By the time you reach Crater Camp, altitude illness has largely passed.

Inside the Caldera

Crater Camp sits on the floor of Kilimanjaro's volcanic caldera at 5,730m — the same caldera that produced the eruptions which formed the mountain. Around you: the Reusch Crater with its active fumaroles, the Ash Pit, and Kilimanjaro's remaining glaciers. Above you: the crater rim where you stand at sunrise. This is not a campsite — it is an event.

Summit at Dawn from Inside the Crater

While other climbers are making their final midnight ascent from Kibo Huts, you are already there. You watch the sunrise over the crater rim from within the caldera — a perspective available to fewer than 500 climbers per year. The sense of isolation and scale is unlike anything else on the mountain.

Four Climbers Maximum

Tanzania National Parks Authority limits Crater Camp to 4 climbers per night. This is a conservation and safety regulation — not a commercial decision. The caldera environment is fragile and the altitude demands small groups. We never exceed this limit. When you sleep at Crater Camp, you share the caldera with at most 3 other people.

Day by Day

9–10 Day Itinerary: Northern Circuit to Crater Camp

Day 1

Rainforest

Arusha — Londorossi Gate — Forest Camp

Elevation: 1,640m → 2,790mDistance: 9 kmTime: 4–5 hrs

Hotel pickup in Arusha. Registration at Londorossi Gate. Begin in dense montane rainforest on Kilimanjaro's western slopes. Meet your full crew — lead guide, assistant guides, cook, and porters. Brief equipment check and dinner at Big Tree Camp. First night at altitude.

Day 2

Heather/Moorland

Forest Camp — Shira 1

Elevation: 2,790m → 3,500mDistance: 7 kmTime: 3–5 hrs

Rise through the heather zone onto the Shira Plateau. Open moorland with views of Kibo cone appearing through the mist. The plateau is vast and rarely visited — often just your team for miles. Shira 1 Camp sits at 3,500m.

Day 3

Moorland/Alpine Desert

Shira 1 — Shira 2 + Shira Cathedral

Elevation: 3,500m → 3,840m → 4,200mDistance: 9 kmTime: 4–6 hrs

Move to Shira 2 Camp. Afternoon acclimatisation hike to Shira Cathedral (3,962m) — a dramatic volcanic rock formation. Classic 'climb high, sleep low' gives your body its first major altitude adaptation opportunity. Descend to Moir Hut to sleep at 4,200m.

Day 4

Alpine Desert

Moir Hut — Lava Tower — Moir Hut

Elevation: 4,200m → 4,600m → 4,200mDistance: 11 kmTime: 6–8 hrs

The critical acclimatisation day. Climb to Lava Tower at 4,600m — your highest camp so far. Your body is learning to produce red blood cells at altitude. Descend to Moir Hut to sleep. This altitude push followed by descent is the single most important day for summit success on any Kilimanjaro route.

Day 5

Alpine Desert / Northern Slopes

Moir Hut — Third Cave Camp

Elevation: 4,200m → 3,870mDistance: 10 kmTime: 4–6 hrs

Enter Kilimanjaro's northern wilderness. The trail here is quiet — often just your team for miles. Traverse remote moorland terrain that fewer than 5% of all Kilimanjaro climbers ever see. Third Cave Camp at 3,870m.

Day 6

Alpine Desert

Third Cave — School Hut

Elevation: 3,870m → 4,750mDistance: 9 kmTime: 5–7 hrs

Significant altitude gain today as the trail climbs toward the eastern rim of the caldera. School Hut at 4,750m is your final camp before the summit push. Afternoon rest, high-calorie dinner, sleep by 7 PM. By now your body has had 5 full days of gradual altitude exposure.

Day 7

Alpine Desert

School Hut — Kibo Huts (rest day)

Elevation: 4,750m → 4,700mDistance: 4 kmTime: 2 hrs

Short walk to Kibo Huts for rest and food. Complete rest afternoon and evening. High-calorie dinner. Sleep by 7 PM. Your summit window opens at midnight. By now your body has had 6 full days of gradual altitude exposure through the Northern Circuit approach.

Day 8

Arctic / Crater Interior

Kibo Huts — Crater Camp (5,730m)

Elevation: 4,700m → 5,730mDistance: 8 kmTime: 6–8 hrs

Walk to Crater Camp (5,730m) — the highest sleeping altitude on Kilimanjaro and the highest overnight camp in Africa. Arrive in late afternoon. The crater floor stretches around you — volcanic, silent, extraordinary. Your camp is visible from Uhuru Peak above. This night is limited to 4 climbers maximum. Night temperatures drop to -20°C.

Day 9

Arctic / Summit

Crater Camp — Uhuru Peak — Mweka Camp

Elevation: 5,730m → 5,895m → 3,100mDistance: 18 kmTime: 12–15 hrs

Summit from inside the crater. Midnight departure, watch the sunrise over the crater rim, then onto Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — rooftop of Africa. You are one of fewer than 500 climbers per year who has slept inside the crater. Descend via Mweka Route to camp at 3,100m.

Day 10

Rainforest

Mweka Camp — Mweka Gate — Arusha

Elevation: 3,100m → 1,640mDistance: 10 kmTime: 3–4 hrs + drive

Final descent through the rainforest. Certificate ceremony at Mweka Gate — your Crater Camp certificate is hand-signed by your lead guide. Transfer to Arusha. Summit dinner. You have slept inside the crater of the tallest mountain in Africa.
