Which Kilimanjaro Route
Actually Fits Your Travel Style?
Six routes. Each described by elevation and day count. None of that tells you which one is right for your body, your companions, or your goal.
Route selection on Kilimanjaro is not a difficulty rating exercise. It is a match between who you are, how your body responds to altitude, and what you want from the experience. A 28-year-old ultramarathoner and a 54-year-old first-time adventurer have different optimal routes. So do a couple on their honeymoon and a corporate leadership team.
This guide works the other way around. Four climber profiles. Each one matched to the route that maximizes their summit probability and their experience quality. Read whichever matches you — or the one that matches the person you are climbing with.
Profile 1
The Solo Climber Seeking Personal Achievement
You traveled to Africa alone. You have hiking experience, you train consistently, and you want the journey to feel earned — not packaged. You are not looking for a group experience; you are looking for a personal one.
Best routes for you: Rongai or Northern Circuit. Both approach from the north — a completely different ecological character, less trafficked, genuine wilderness. The Northern Circuit on a 9-day itinerary achieves the longest acclimatisation profile of any Kilimanjaro route. Rongai gives you remoteness and a different summit approach than the standard routes.
Why Rongai for solo climbers
- North-side approach — forest, alpine desert, and glacier views most other routes miss
- Fewer climbers overall — you will have long sections to yourself
- Gradual altitude profile on the 6-day itinerary
- Summit via the northern approach to Uhuru Peak — fewer crowds at the top
- Bobby Tours can join you with a group departure — share the cost, keep the independence

Profile 2
The Couple — Romance and Achievement
You are celebrating an anniversary, a honeymoon, or just a shared goal. You want the experience to feel special — not just athletic. You are looking for something you will talk about for the rest of your lives.
Best routes for you: Marangu or 7-day Lemosho. Marangu is the only route with hut accommodation — private rooms, no camping gear to manage, iconic and comfortable. Lemosho gives you beautiful campsites, excellent acclimatization, and the romance of camping under African stars at altitude. Both deliver a summit story no resort can match.
What makes it special
- Private hut option on Marangu — your own room every night except summit camp
- Champagne at crater rim on summiteer packages
- Professional summit photographs included in Bobby Tours packages
- Private 2-person tent on all Lemosho departures
- Post-climb celebration dinner in Moshi included

Profile 3
The Corporate Team — Culture and Challenge
Leadership retreat. Team building. Company incentive trip. You want the mountain to do what an off-site cannot — create genuine shared adversity, build trust under pressure, and give your team a story they actually want to tell.
Best routes for you: 7-day Machame or 8-day Lemosho. Machame has a structured, progressive challenge that creates natural team dynamics — the Barranco Wall on day 4 is a literal shared climb that builds trust. Lemosho offers more comfort and more impressive campsites for team dinners at altitude.
Bobby Tours Corporate Package
- Pre-climb strategy briefing call with your lead guide
- Company flag carried to Uhuru Peak and presented at summit
- Certificate of achievement for each climber
- Post-climb celebration dinner in Moshi
- Custom video summary of your team on the mountain
- Group sizes of 6–16 handled with dedicated guide ratios

Profile 4
The First-Timer Over 50 — Safety and Achievement
Fit for your age. First major altitude experience. You want the achievement without unnecessary risk. You have done your research — you know that age is not the barrier; altitude adaptation speed is. You want a route that gives your body the best possible chance.
Best routes for you: 8-day Northern Circuit or 7-day Lemosho. The Northern Circuit has the slowest altitude gain of any Kili route, the highest success rate for older climbers, and the most time above 4,000m without rapid exposure. Critically, it has no Barranco Wall — no scrambling, no technical sections. The camps are less exposed. Your body has time to adapt.
Why Northern Circuit for this profile
- No scrambling or climbing experience required — 100% hiking
- Slowest altitude gain of any Kili route
- Most nights above 4,000m with gradual exposure
- Remote northern approach — different ecological character
- 95%+ success rate on 9-day itinerary for over-50s
- Bobby Tours pre-climb medical screening — honest assessment, no pressure
