Kilimanjaro Base Town Guide
MOSHI VS ARUSHA
Which base town is better for your Kilimanjaro climb? We have run climbs from both towns for 48 years. Here is the complete comparison.
Jump to Decision FlowchartEvery Kilimanjaro climb starts in one of two towns: Moshi or Arusha. Most climbers default to whichever the operator recommends. That is a mistake — the right choice depends on your flight path, your route, your budget, and what you want from the days before and after the mountain.
This guide compares Moshi and Arusha across the six dimensions that matter most to Kilimanjaro climbers: proximity to your gate, accommodation price and quality, pre-climb preparation services, restaurant scene, post-climb recovery, and shuttle connectivity. A decision flowchart is at the end.
Moshi Elevation
890m
Arusha Elevation
1,400m
Moshi to Machame Gate
40 km / 40 min
Arusha to Machame Gate
85 km / 90 min
1. PROXIMITY TO PARK GATES
Moshi wins on proximity. It sits at the southern foot of Kilimanjaro, within 45 minutes of the three most popular gates. Arusha is an additional 45-60 minutes away on winding mountain roads — meaningful when you are waking at 5 AM for a 6 AM gate departure.
| Route / Gate | From Moshi | From Arusha |
|---|---|---|
| Machame Gate (Machame, Lemosho, Umbwe) | 35–45 min | 90–120 min |
| Marangu Gate (Marangu Route) | 60–75 min | 90–120 min |
| Rongai Gate (Rongai Route) | 90–120 min | 60–90 min |
| Londross Gate (Northern Circuit) | 90–120 min | 75–90 min |
Verdict: Choose Moshi for Machame, Lemosho, or Umbwe routes. Choose Arusha for Rongai or Northern Circuit.
2. ACCOMMODATION QUALITY AND PRICE
Arusha has more hotel variety — more international chains, more restaurants, more nightlife. Moshi is smaller, quieter, and cheaper. For a pre-climb night where early sleep matters, Moshi often wins on practical grounds.
| Tier | Moshi ($/night) | Arusha ($/night) |
|---|---|---|
| Budget (guesthouse, shared bath possible) | $15–35 | $20–45 |
| Mid-range (private bath, AC, breakfast) | $50–120 | $60–150 |
| Luxury (pool, garden, mountain view) | $120–250 | $150–350 |
Moshi hotel picks (Mount Kilimanjaro Climb favourites)
- Budget: Kindoroko Hotel ($25–45 with breakfast)
- Mid-range: Amanyali Lodge, Kia Lodge ($70–120)
- Pre-climb: Stella Maris Lodge — mountain-view terrace, quiet at night
Arusha hotel picks
- Budget: Outpost Lodge ($25–50 with breakfast)
- Mid-range: Arusha Coffee Lodge, Tamboho Plaza ($100–180)
- Luxury: Arusha Serena Hotel, Ngorongoro Serena ($200–350)
3. PRE-CLIMB PREPARATION SERVICES
Both towns have gear shops, ATMs, and SIM card vendors. Moshi has an edge in one specific area: every gear shop and travel agency near the clock tower has been serving Kilimanjaro climbers for decades. Arusha is more generalised — it is the safari hub, not the climbing hub.

4. FOOD AND RESTAURANT SCENE
Arusha is the clear winner on restaurant variety. It has Indian, Italian, Ethiopian, and international cuisine — a result of decades as Tanzania's safari capital with a large expatriate community. Moshi has solid local food and a few good Indian restaurants, but options are more limited.
For pre-climb nutrition, both towns have what you need: fresh fruit, grilled protein, rice, and vegetables. The night before your climb, we recommend a light meal regardless of which town you are in. Heavy food and alcohol impair sleep and hydration recovery.
Moshi dining highlights
- The Coffee Shop (near Clock Tower) — good breakfast
- Indian Palace — best Indian food in Moshi
- Mama Milka — local food, affordable
- Victoria Bakery — coffee, pastries, reliable
Arusha dining highlights
- Tamboho (Cultural Heritage Centre) — upmarket, varied cuisine
- Spice Route — Indian, consistently excellent
- Beijing Chinese Restaurant — reliable for a change
- Café Tapestry — best coffee in Arusha
Pre-climb dinner tip: Avoid any restaurant with a loud bar or music. You need a quiet table and an early finish. Ask your hotel restaurant to prepare something light — most hotels in both towns are familiar with the request.
5. POST-CLIMB RECOVERY
Your body after a Kilimanjaro summit is not ready for a 3-hour drive. Both towns are usable for recovery, but in different ways.
Moshi recovery advantage: The town is at 890m — closer to the altitude you just descended from. The air feels thick and oxygen-rich after the mountain. Several small lodges have quiet gardens where you can lie in a hammock for two days and do very little. You are also closer to the Kilimanjaro International Airport (40 km) for a same-day or next-day flight out.
Arusha recovery advantage: Better medical facilities (Arusha has the only private hospitals in the region), more pharmacies, and more massage and spa options. If you developed any altitude symptoms on the mountain, Arusha is the safer choice for post-climb monitoring.
Our recovery recommendation
Stay in Moshi for 1-2 nights after your descent. Sleep long hours, eat well, drink extra water. Then decide: fly home from JRO (40 km from Moshi), or continue to a safari from Arusha (90-minute drive). If you need a hospital, both towns have facilities — Arusha's are more comprehensive.
6. SHUTTLE AND CONNECTIVITY
From Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO)
Moshi: 45 min — $25-40 private taxi, $25 shared shuttle
Arusha: 60 min — $40-60 private taxi, $30 shared shuttle
From Nairobi (NBO Airport)
Moshi: 5-6 hr drive or fly JRO ($80-200, 1hr)
Arusha: 5-6 hr drive or fly JRO ($80-200, 1hr)
To Serengeti / Ngorongoro (safari start)
Moshi: Add 90-min drive to safari pickup point
Arusha: Standard safari departure point
Inter-town transfer (Moshi ↔ Arusha)
Moshi: 90 min, $20-30 by shared daladala or $40-60 private
Arusha: 90 min, same cost structure
Note: Mount Kilimanjaro Climb includes all airport transfers, inter-town transfers, and gate transfers in every climb package. If you book with us, your driver meets you at JRO and handles all transport logistics — you do not need to arrange any shuttle independently.
DECISION FLOWCHART
Answer these three questions in order. The last one you answer determines your base town.
QUESTION 1
Which airport are you flying into?
Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)
Shortest route. Fly to JRO → Moshi (45 min) or Arusha (60 min).
Nairobi Airport (NBO) — flying via Kenya
Add a 5-6 hour drive from Nairobi to Moshi or Arusha. Moshi is marginally closer. Most climbers route through Kenya only if JRO has no suitable flights.
If you answered A (JRO): go to Question 2. If B (Nairobi): go to Question 3.
QUESTION 2
Which route are you climbing?
MOSHI — Machame, Lemosho, Umbwe
All three southern-gate routes depart within 45 minutes of Moshi. This is the standard choice for most climbers. Stay in Moshi.
ARUSHA — Rongai, Northern Circuit
Rongai (Kenyan side) and Northern Circuit are closer to Arusha. Base yourself there and add the pre-night in Arusha.
Marangu Route? Both towns are 90-120 min from Marangu Gate — use your airport answer from Q1 to decide.
QUESTION 3
Are you combining your climb with a Tanzania safari?
Yes — planning a safari after the climb
Arusha is the standard safari departure point for Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire. Fly into JRO, stay in Moshi for the climb, recover in Moshi, then drive to Arusha for your safari. Alternatively, fly into JRO and base yourself in Arusha throughout — more hotel choice, longer pre-climb drive to the mountain.
No — climb only, flying home after
Moshi is closer to JRO (40 km). A post-climb same-day flight out is feasible from Moshi. Base yourself in Moshi for the climb, recover 1 night, then head to the airport.
Our 48-year verdict
75% of our climbers choose Moshi. It is closer to the mountain, cheaper, quieter, and purpose-built for Kilimanjaro logistics. Arusha is the right choice for Rongai and Northern Circuit climbers, safari combiners, and travellers who want more urban amenities.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is Moshi or Arusha better for a Kilimanjaro climb?
Moshi is better for climbers whose priority is proximity to the mountain. It sits at 890m beside Kilimanjaro, 35-45 minutes from the Machame, Lemosho, and Umbwe gates. Arusha is better if you want more hotel variety, better restaurants, or are combining the climb with a safari to Serengeti or Ngorongoro.
Which airport is closest to Kilimanjaro?
Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is 40 km from Moshi and 60 km from Arusha. JRO handles international flights from Europe, the Middle East, and African hubs. Nairobi Airport (NBO) is an alternative for travellers flying via Kenya — add a 5-hour drive from Nairobi to either Moshi or Arusha.
How much does accommodation cost in Moshi vs Arusha?
Moshi budget guesthouses run $15-35/night. Mid-range hotels are $50-120/night. Arusha budget accommodation is $20-45/night; mid-range $60-150/night. Both towns have comparable luxury options at $150-350/night. Moshi has fewer high-end options but is significantly cheaper at the budget and mid-range tiers.
Can I do a Kilimanjaro climb from Arusha?
Yes. All Kilimanjaro routes can be arranged from Arusha, and it is the natural base for climbs that start at the Rongai Gate (on the Kenyan side of the mountain) or the Northern Circuit. Most Arusha-based operators provide transport to all gates from Arusha. The drive from Arusha to Machame Gate takes 90-120 minutes.
Do I need to arrive the day before my Kilimanjaro climb?
Yes. We strongly recommend arriving at least one full day before your climb start date. This allows time to recover from travel fatigue, adjust to the altitude (even at 890m in Moshi), do a last-minute gear check, and attend the pre-climb briefing with your guide team.
