Your guide will meet you in Moshi. Not Arusha. Here is exactly why that matters.
Moshi is the Kilimanjaro climbing town. Every registered operator, every gear shop, every experienced guide lives and works here. Moshi sits at 890m at the base of the mountain — Kilimanjaro is visible from most streets on a clear morning. Arusha is a safari town, 80km southwest of the mountain, built for a completely different industry. If you are climbing Kilimanjaro, Moshi is not a recommendation. It is the only logical base.
- →30 min from JRO Airport
- →1 hour to Machame Gate
- →890m altitude — gentle first night
- →All climbing operators based here
- →Gear shops, climbing supply stores
- →Kilimanjaro visible from town
- ×2.5–3 hours from Machame Gate
- ×Safari hub — different infrastructure
- ×No dedicated climbing gear shops
- ×Guides commute from Moshi — briefing on the road
- ×Mountain often not visible (cloud cover)
- ×05:00 departure required for day-one gate arrival

Why Moshi Is the Right Choice
Every registered Kilimanjaro operator — from the smallest local company to the largest international ones — maintains their primary office in Moshi. This is not an accident. The town has spent 50 years building the infrastructure for climbing: experienced guides who live here, gear rental shops with real stock, vehicle maintenance for the mountain routes, and relationships with TANAPA park officials that operators in Arusha simply do not have.
The altitude difference is not cosmetic. Sleeping at 890m in Moshi for one night before Machame Gate at 1,800m gives your body its first gentle exposure to reduced oxygen. You do not feel it immediately — but your hypoxic ventilatory response begins to activate. On summit night, when you are breathing hard at 5,000m, every hour of pre-adjustment matters.
The climber-catered restaurants in Moshi are a genuine asset. Happy Dog and Kili Stone are institutions among Kilimanjaro guides — they know what climbers need to eat the night before a summit attempt, and they cook for the pre-climb briefing dinner that every serious operator holds the evening before departure. Arusha has excellent safari restaurants. It does not have Kilimanjaro climbing restaurants.

The Summit Night Rule
Always stay in Moshi the night before your climb begins. Always return to Moshi after your climb — never attempt to travel to Arusha or a safari departure the same day you descend from the mountain. The physiological demands of a Kilimanjaro summit are significant and recovery matters.
Summit night is spent on the mountain. Every other night — the two nights before, and the first night after descent — belongs in Moshi.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to walk around Moshi at night?
Yes. Moshi is a small town and the area around the main climbing operator offices is active and well-lit in the evenings. Climbers regularly walk to restaurants and back. As with any town, use standard precautions — our team provides a briefing on the local area when you arrive.
Can I stay at Machame Gate the night before?
No — and this is prohibited by TANAPA. Camping at or near Machame Gate without a valid permit is not permitted. All pre-climb accommodation must be in Moshi or Arusha. This is one reason Arusha-based operators have a longer transfer on day one — they cannot overnight near the gate.
What if I want to do a safari after my climb?
Most climbers do the safari after, not before. After the climb, you descend to Moshi, have a hot meal and a night's rest, then travel to your safari departure point (typically Serengeti or Ngorongoro) the next morning. We can arrange a combined Kilimanjaro climb + safari itinerary — speak to Don about the logistics.
Should I book my Moshi hotel before or after booking the climb?
Book both simultaneously — your operator will confirm your climb dates first, then advise on hotel availability for those dates. In peak season (July–September), premium Moshi hotels book out 4–6 weeks ahead. Budget options are more available year-round. We maintain relationships with all Moshi hotels and can often secure priority booking even during peak periods.
