Kilimanjaro Summit Certificate: Gold vs Green
Yes — you receive an official TANAPA certificate. Gold for Uhuru Peak (5,895m), green for Gilman's Point (5,685m). Here's what each one says and where you collect it.

Does Kilimanjaro give you a summit certificate?
Yes. Every climber who reaches Gilman's Point (5,685m) or Uhuru Peak (5,895m) receives an official TANAPA certificate — signed by a park ranger and presented at the park gate on your descent day.
What Is the Kilimanjaro Summit Certificate?
Every climber who reaches the crater rim or higher receives an official certificate from Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA). It is presented at the park gate on your descent day and signed by the park authority. It is the formal record that you climbed Africa's highest mountain.
There are two certificates, and the difference between them matters.
Uhuru Peak Certificate (Gold)
The gold certificate is awarded to climbers who reach Uhuru Peak — the true summit of Kilimanjaro at 5,895m above sea level. It states the summit name, the elevation, your name, the date, and the route. This is what most people picture when they think of summiting Kilimanjaro. Mount Kilimanjaro Climb's 95% success rate refers to Uhuru Peak.
Gilman's Point Certificate (Green)
Gilman's Point is the crater rim at 5,685m — reached before Uhuru Peak on most routes. Climbers who reach Gilman's Point but cannot continue to Uhuru due to altitude sickness, weather, or time receive the green certificate. It is still a genuine and significant achievement — you have climbed higher than 99% of people on earth.
The 210m and 1–2 hour additional walk from Gilman's Point to Uhuru along the crater rim is where some climbers reach their limit. Good acclimatization and a strong guiding team are what get you the extra distance.
The Certificate Ceremony
After descending from the summit and completing the final day's walk to the park gate, your guide signs off your achievement with the park rangers. The ceremony is brief but meaningful — your guide who walked every step with you confirms to the park authority that you reached the stated elevation. This is not a formality. The park rangers verify the guide's signature against the daily summit register before issuing the certificate.
Mount Kilimanjaro Climb has been recording client summits since 1978. Every certificate is backed by 48 years of guiding records. In the event of a lost certificate, we can provide a certified copy of your summit record from our archives. This has been relevant for clients applying for subsequent travel visas or mountaineering certifications that require proof of high-altitude experience.
What Happens If You Turn Back Before the Summit?
Climbers who reach Gilman's Point (5,685m) but cannot continue to Uhuru receive the green certificate. Gilman's Point is the crater rim — you have climbed to the edge of Kilimanjaro's summit caldera. This is a genuine achievement that fewer than 5 percent of Kilimanjaro climbers attempt without reaching Uhuru. The additional 210m and approximately 1.5 hours of walking along the crater rim to Uhuru is where altitude, weather, and fatigue converge to end some climbs.
Climbers who descend from camps above 4,000m without reaching Gilman's Point do not receive a certificate. They receive a gate exit stamp showing they entered the park and completed the climb. This is still recorded — it appears on your park entry record — but it is not a summit certificate. If your climb ends early due to health reasons, your guide will discuss the possibility of returning for a second attempt. Some of our most determined clients have returned 12 months later and reached Uhuru.
Certificates and Visa Applications
Tanzania tourist visas do not require proof of climbing experience. However, several countries' visa application processes — particularly for Nepal (Everest Base Camp), Peru (Ausangate, Inca Trail), and Bolivia (Huayna Potosi, Condoriri) — ask applicants to demonstrate high-altitude trekking experience. A Kilimanjaro summit certificate from Tanzania National Parks is recognized documentation for this purpose. The certificate includes your name, the date, the elevation reached, and the official TANAPA stamp and signature.
Keep a digital copy of your certificate in cloud storage. Physical certificates can be damaged or lost. Mount Kilimanjaro Climb maintains copies of all client summit records dating back to 1978 — if you need a replacement copy for any reason, contact us with your name and approximate climb date.

Certificate Summary
Ready to Earn Your Summit Certificate?
95% of our clients reach Uhuru Peak. Browse our routes to find the itinerary that fits your timeline and goals.
What certificate do you get for climbing Kilimanjaro?
An official TANAPA certificate. Gold for Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Green for Gilman's Point (5,685m). Both are issued at the park gate on descent day.
What is the difference between Uhuru Peak and Gilman's Point certificates?
Uhuru Peak is the true summit (5,895m) — gold certificate. Gilman's Point is the crater rim (5,685m) — green certificate. Mount Kilimanjaro Climb's 95% success rate refers to Uhuru Peak.
Where do you receive the Kilimanjaro certificate?
At the park gate on your final descent day — Mweka Gate for southern routes, Marangu Gate for Marangu Route. Issued by Tanzania National Parks rangers.
Can I get a replacement certificate if I lost the original?
Mount Kilimanjaro Climb maintains summit records for all clients dating back to 1978. If you have lost your certificate, contact us with your name and approximate climb date. We can provide a certified letter confirming your summit, which includes the elevation, date, and route. For TANAPA's official replacement process, we can assist with the application — there is a fee payable to the park authority for replacement certificates.
What is the difference between a Kilimanjaro summit certificate and the Summit Success Certificate?
The official TANAPA (Tanzania National Parks) summit certificate is the only officially recognized Kilimanjaro certificate. Some private operators issue their own certificates or branded certificates — these are not official documents. Mount Kilimanjaro Climb issues the official TANAPA certificate only, signed by the park authority. The distinction matters if you need documented proof of high-altitude experience for subsequent climbing permits or visa applications.
Is the Kilimanjaro certificate accepted as proof of high-altitude experience for Everest Base Camp or other peaks?
Yes, in most cases. A TANAPA summit certificate showing a 5,895m Uhuru Peak ascent is recognized documentation of high-altitude trekking experience. When applying for Everest Base Camp treks in Nepal, for climbing permits in Peru or Bolivia, or for other high-altitude destinations, a certified copy of your Kilimanjaro certificate alongside your park entry receipts is typically sufficient proof of experience.
What happens to the certificate if I need emergency evacuation before reaching the summit?
Emergency evacuations from above 4,000m — by helicopter or stretcher — are recorded by the park authority. If you are evacuated before reaching Gilman's Point or Uhuru Peak, you will not receive a summit certificate. However, Mount Kilimanjaro Climb will provide a letter documenting your climb attempt and the circumstances of the evacuation. If you later recover and wish to return, we offer a discounted rate for returning clients on the same route.
