Kilimanjaro Airport Shuttle
From Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) to Moshi or Arusha: shuttle options, real costs, booking tips, and what to expect. From a local operator who has been doing this since 1978.
Which Airport Do You Fly Into?
Almost all international climbers fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), located between Moshi and Arusha. A smaller number arrive via Arusha Airport (ARK) on regional flights. JRO is the main gateway — most of this guide covers JRO transfers.
JRO — Kilimanjaro Airport
- · International hub — KLM, Ethiopian, Qatar, Turkish
- · 40 km from Moshi, 80 km from Arusha
- · 45 min–1.5 hours to Moshi
- · All major climb operators meet here
ARK — Arusha Airport
- · Regional flights only (Nairobi, Dar, Zanzibar)
- · Located within Arusha city
- · 2 hours to Moshi
- · Less convenient for climbs — JRO is preferred
Shuttle Options: JRO to Moshi
Most climbers land in the evening or early morning. Here's what's available:
1. Operator-Provided Shuttle (Recommended)
$0–80Most climb operators — including Mount Kilimanjaro Climb — include airport transfer in the package price. Flights to Kilimanjaro — see our full guide to getting to the mountain. Driver meets you at arrivals with a name sign. No negotiation, no taxi meters, no stress.
Book your climb first. The operator handles the rest. Confirm pickup details in your pre-departure email.
2. Shared Shuttle (Budget)
$25–35/personOffered by hotels and local transfer services. Shared van with other travelers heading to Moshi. Takes longer (up to 2 hours) while waiting for enough passengers. Cheapest option if not included by your operator.
Book via your hotel or through a local transfer service 24+ hours in advance.
3. Private Taxi
$50–80Negotiate before you get in. Airport taxis are infamous for inflating prices for tourists. Agree on a flat rate in USD before departure. A fair rate: $50–70 from JRO to Moshi. Arusha is $80–100.
Use your hotel's recommended driver or ask your operator for a trusted contact.
4. Hotel Shuttle
$30–60Many Moshi hotels offer airport pickup for $30–60. Most include it free for guests. Ask when booking. Higher-end hotels (e.g., Panovic, Amauro) provide this as a service.

Moshi vs Arusha: Where to Stay?
95% of Kilimanjaro climbers stay in Moshi before and after the climb. Here's why:
Stay in Moshi
- ✓ 45 min from Kilimanjaro Airport
- ✓ Gateway to all climb routes
- ✓ Local climbing gear shops
- ✓ Ample budget-to-mid hotels
- ✓ Easy access to your operator's office
- ✓ ATM for Tanzanian Shillings (TZS)
Recommended: Panovic Hotel, Amauro Boutique, Moshi Mountain Hotel
Stay in Arusha
- ✓ Better restaurants and nightlife
- ✓ Better for safari combinations
- ✓ More international brand hotels
- ✗ 2 hours from JRO airport
- ✗ 30 min further from climb gates
- ✗ Extra transfer cost and fatigue
Better choice if combining climb + safari starting in Arusha, or if you need international-level hotel amenities.
What to Expect on Arrival
Step 1: Visa on Arrival
Most nationalities get a visa on arrival at JRO ($50–100 USD, cash only). Have your passport (6+ months validity), return flight booking, and proof of accommodation ready. Processing takes 15–45 minutes.
Step 2: Customs & Luggage
Pick up your checked luggage at the carousel. Declaring large amounts of cash or equipment? The customs form asks. Climbing gear (boots, poles) is fine. Commercial quantities of medication need declaration.
Step 3: Meet Your Transfer
After customs, you'll see a crowd of drivers and hotel reps. Look for a sign with your name. Mount Kilimanjaro Climb drivers wait inside the terminal past the shop area — look for the Mount Kilimanjaro Climb sign. If you've arranged a taxi, agree on the price before loading luggage.
Step 4: The Drive to Moshi
45 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on time of day and road construction. The road from JRO to Moshi passes through coffee and banana plantations. At night, watch for pedestrians and cyclists — headlights are not always used.
Practical Tips
Currency
ATM at JRO arrivals. USD widely accepted for tourist services. TZS needed for tips, small purchases. Airport ATMs sometimes run out — exchange or withdraw before leaving the airport.
SIM Card
Vodacom and Airtel kiosks at JRO arrivals. ~$5 for a tourist SIM with data. Recommended if you want connectivity in Moshi. Your operator will have a local contact number.
Time of Day Matters
Late-night arrivals (midnight+): fewer taxi options, airport shuttle may not be available. Morning arrivals (6–10am): smoothest transfer, especially in dry season. Evening arrivals (5–7pm): traffic on the mountain road.
Pre-Climb Night
Book your pre-climb Moshi hotel the same day you arrive — don't attempt to do the climb the next morning after an overnight flight. Altitude + jet lag + overnight flight = bad combination. Arrive 1–2 days early if possible.
