How Kilimanjaro Permits Work

All Kilimanjaro climbers pay park fees to TANAPA (Tanzania National Parks Authority). These are mandatory charges that cover access to the national park, use of camping or hut facilities, and the park rescue service. You cannot climb Kilimanjaro without them.

The important thing to know: climbers do not arrange permits themselves. Permits are issued through licensed operators. When you book a climb with Mount Kilimanjaro Climb, we handle all permit applications, fee payments, and paperwork. You arrive at the gate and begin climbing.

Are Park Fees Included in Climb Packages?

Reputable operators include all TANAPA park fees in the quoted price. Always confirm this before booking.

Some budget operators quote a low base price and add park fees separately at the end. This is a common pricing tactic. A quoted price of $800 that adds $1,200 in park fees is not a $800 climb. Always ask: does your quoted price include all TANAPA park fees?

Mount Kilimanjaro Climb includes all park fees, rescue fees, camping fees, and guide gate fees in the all-inclusive price. The price you are quoted is the price you pay.

The Rescue Fee — What It Does and Does Not Cover

The mandatory $20 TANAPA rescue fee funds the national park rescue team. This team coordinates ground evacuations for climbers who need to descend due to altitude sickness or injury.

It does not cover helicopter evacuations or medical repatriation. All Kilimanjaro climbers should carry separate travel insurance that includes mountain rescue and emergency medical evacuation. This is not optional — it is a genuine safety requirement.

Kilimanjaro Permits — Common Questions

How much does a Kilimanjaro permit cost?

TANAPA charges approximately $70/day conservation fee, $50/day camping fee, and a $20 one-time rescue fee. A 7-day climb costs around $1,210 in park fees alone. These are included in Mount Kilimanjaro Climb' all-inclusive prices.

Do I need to arrange my own permit?

No. Your licensed operator handles all permit arrangements. You cannot buy a permit independently. When you book with Mount Kilimanjaro Climb, we handle all applications, payments, and gate paperwork.

What does the rescue fee cover?

The $20 TANAPA rescue fee funds the national park ground rescue team. It does not cover helicopter evacuation or medical repatriation. Separate travel insurance with mountain rescue cover is strongly recommended.

Are park fees included in the climb price?

At Mount Kilimanjaro Climb, yes — all TANAPA park fees are included in the quoted price. Always confirm this with any operator. Some budget operators quote without fees to appear cheaper, then add them separately.
