Climb Kilimanjaro in November

Short rains begin. Crowds disappear. The mountain gets green. Here is the honest guide.

Climbing Kilimanjaro in November costs between $1,895 and $3,200 per person depending on route and group size — up to 30% less than December peak season pricing. November marks the start of Tanzania short rains (locally called the Vuli), when afternoon showers become regular on the southern and eastern slopes. The northern approaches stay noticeably drier. Summit conditions above 4,000m remain excellent for the vast majority of November days.

What November Actually Looks Like on the Mountain

November on Kilimanjaro is defined by transition. The dry season that ran from June through October breaks as the short rains arrive — but these are nothing like the long rains of March to May. Expect afternoon cloud and occasional showers, particularly on southern and eastern slopes, with mornings frequently clear enough for excellent sunrise views from the crater rim.

The mountain transforms visually. November rain wakes the forest zone — trees drip with moisture, moss brightens on ancient treeline giants, and the landscape shifts from the dusty amber of the dry season to vivid, saturated green. Photographers find November the most dramatic month on Kilimanjaro: low-angle morning light through misted forest, cloud layers below the summit cone, and the greenest vegetation you will see all year.

The critical distinction is between zones. The rainforest zone (1,800m-2,800m) is where the short rains are most felt — muddy trails, leech activity, and persistent damp. Above 3,000m in the alpine desert, conditions improve dramatically. By Kibo Crater rim at 5,000m+, November weather is mostly clear cold nights, dry trails, and extraordinary summit visibility.

Kilimanjaro Zones in November

Rainforest Zone (1,800m-2,800m)

Wet and lush. Daily rain likely, especially afternoons. Muddy trails are the main challenge. Leeches appear after rainfall. Morning starts help — get above the cloud before noon.

Pack: Rain shell, waterproof boots, gaiters

Moorland Zone (2,800m-4,000m)

Variable. Morning climbs often clear. Afternoon clouds build. Giant heather and lobelia are at their greenest and most photogenic in November. Night temperatures drop to -10C to -15C.

Pack: Insulating layers, down jacket for nights

Alpine Desert + Summit (4,000m-5,895m)

Generally excellent. Above the rain belt. Cold, dry, clear. Summit nights in November offer some of the best star visibility on the mountain. Wind can be a factor above 4,500m.

Pack: Down suit or heavy down jacket, balaclava, glacier gloves

Best Routes for November

Rongai Route — RECOMMENDED 1

Approaches from the north, Kenya side. Catches significantly less of the short rains system. Drier trails, less mud, more morning clarity. 6-7 days is possible but 7-8 days is strongly recommended for better acclimatization. The least crowded of the established routes.

Best for: Climbers who want the driest November conditions

Lemosho Route — RECOMMENDED 2

Approaches from the west and crosses the entire mountain — a true traverse. Western slopes catch some November rain but less than southern routes. The Shira Plateau approach in particular is relatively dry. Longer itineraries (8 days) perform significantly better than 7-day versions in November conditions.

Best for: Climbers who want the most scenic traverse experience

Northern Circuit — Best Acclimatization

The newest and longest route on Kilimanjaro. Approaches from the north, circles east via the quiet northern slopes. 8-9 days minimum. The extended time above 3,000m dramatically improves summit success in any month, but especially in November when extra rest days help weather-related fatigue.

Best for: Climbers prioritizing summit success above all else

Machame Route — Avoid 6-Day November

The most popular route and the most crowded. Southern approach catches November rain. The 6-day Machame itinerary is aggressive for any month; in November, it significantly increases altitude sickness risk. If choosing Machame, book the 7- or 8-day version and expect muddy conditions on days 1-3.

Best for: Experienced climbers on 7+ day itineraries only

The November Advantage

Combine Your Climb with a November Safari

November is one of the most magical months for a Tanzania safari. The short rains trigger the beginning of the wildebeest calving season in the Serengeti short grass plains — wildebeest begin giving birth in late November, creating one of Africa most most dramatic wildlife spectacles.

Predator density around the calving herds is extraordinary — lions, hyenas, and cheetahs follow the herds specifically for this period. November safari visitors consistently report some of the best wildlife viewing of their lives.

Popular November Combo:

7-day Lemosho climb + 3-day Serengeti safari from $4,395 per person — saving $600 vs booking separately.

Plan My Safari Extension

What You See on a November Safari

  • Newborn wildebeest calves (thousands, first 2 weeks of life)
  • Predator activity around calving herds
  • Excellent bird photography (migratory species present)
  • Green landscapes — not the dry amber of peak season
  • Far fewer tourists than December-February

November Safari Regions

  • Serengeti central/south: Calving grounds — best wildlife viewing
  • Ngorongoro Crater: Year-round excellent, less crowded in November
  • Tarangire: Elephant herds concentrate at Tarangire River

5 Tips for a Successful November Climb

1

Start Summit Day Early

In November, aim for a 10pm or midnight summit departure. Getting above 4,500m before morning cloud builds gives you the best summit visibility window.

2

Waterproof Everything

Your dry-season kit needs waterproof layers. Pack covers for your daypack. Store phone and camera in waterproof bags. This sounds obvious but November catches unprepared climbers.

3

Book the Rongai Route

Northern approach, drier conditions, less mud, quieter trails. In November, Rongai is the smartest choice for climbers who want to minimize weather-related risk.

4

Add a Safari Day

November safari conditions are underrated. The Serengeti calving season starts in late November. Adding even one safari day after your climb gives you the complete Tanzania experience.

5

Choose 8+ Days

November variable conditions mean your body will work harder on the lower mountain. Extra days above 3,000m before your summit attempt significantly improve your odds.

November Climb — Common Questions

Is November the cheapest month to climb Kilimanjaro?

November pricing is noticeably lower than December through February — typically 15-30% cheaper. April and May are sometimes cheaper still, but November weather is significantly better than those long-rains months. November represents the best value-to-conditions balance on the mountain.

What should I pack specifically for November that I would not pack for June?

November requires: waterproof rain jacket (critical), waterproof hiking boots, gaiters, waterproof daypack cover, and a pack of waterproof compression bags for your summit night clothing. Everything else — down layers, glacier gloves, balaclava — is the same year-round.

Can beginners climb Kilimanjaro in November?

Yes — with the right preparation and route choice. November rewards the same qualities as any month: good cardiovascular fitness, mental preparation for hard days, and awareness of altitude symptoms. Choose the Rongai or Lemosho Route on an 8-day itinerary minimum. Do not book a 6-day route in November regardless of your fitness level.

How crowded is the mountain in November?

November is one of the quietest months on Kilimanjaro. The number of climbers is roughly 30-40% of July or August levels. You will still encounter groups on popular routes, but November Rongai and Northern Circuit campsites may have just 3-4 tents where August would have 30.

Is there a risk of flooding or trail closures in November?

No official closures occur in November — Kilimanjaro never officially closes. However, heavy rain events can cause temporary stream crossings to become difficult and some steep trail sections become hazardous. Experienced operators monitor conditions and adjust itineraries when weather creates unsafe conditions.
