Climb Kilimanjaro in May 2026

You're here — May has arrived. The long rains are winding down, the mountain is green, and the routes are empty. This is Kilimanjaro's best-kept climbing secret, right now.

Is May a Good Time to Climb Kilimanjaro?

Most guidebooks and travel websites warn against climbing Kilimanjaro during the rainy season. They are not wrong — April is genuinely wet, and the mountain presents real challenges. But May is different. May is the final month of the long rainy season, and it behaves differently from April in ways that matter for climbers.

By May, the rains are diminishing. The mountain is at its greenest and most beautiful. Routes that were churned to mud in April have recovered. The landscape is vivid — thick cloud forests, flowering heather, moss-covered trees. And because most climbers have been conditioned to avoid the rainy season, May routes are nearly empty.

May is Kilimanjaro's best-kept secret. Here is the honest guide.

The cloud forest zone (1,800–2,800m) in May — spectacularly green as the rainy season winds down

May Weather by Altitude Zone

Rainforest Zone (1,800m to 2,800m)

May is the transition month. Early May can still see afternoon rain, but by mid-month the pattern shifts noticeably. The forest is at its most beautiful — dripping with moisture, thick with vegetation, alive with birdsong. Waterproof boots and gaiters are still essential. By late May, the forest floor begins to dry.

Moorland Zone (2,800m to 4,000m)

The heather moorland is spectacular in May. Purple and white Erica blossoms appear. Afternoon cloud is common but rarely interferes with morning views. The trail surfaces are largely intact — not yet the dusty, eroded paths of the peak dry season.

Alpine Desert (4,000m to 5,000m)

The desert zone is largely unaffected by May's transition. Conditions are dry and stable. This is where the dry-season and rainy-season climbers experience similar conditions year-round — cold nights, clear mornings, afternoon cloud building.

Summit Zone (5,000m to 5,895m)

Summit conditions in May are similar to the dry season — cold, clear nights with temperatures reaching -10C to -20C. Summit night views in May can be exceptional when the cloud layer sits below the crater rim. A May summit offer unobstructed 360-degree views of the plateau below.

Why May Climbers Get the Mountain to Themselves

The perception of rainy-season Kilimanjaro keeps most serious climbers away in May. The result: routes that would have 20 other groups in July have 2. Rongai, which typically sees the lowest traffic of any route, may have no other groups at all in late May.

This has practical advantages beyond the experience itself. Campsites are less degraded. Porters and guides are fresher — not yet worn down by the peak-season conveyor belt. Your group gets more personal attention because the operation is not running at capacity.

Late-May departures — after 20 May — are particularly well-positioned. The rainy season has largely ended, the landscape is still green, and the dry-season price increases have not yet kicked in.

Best Routes for May

Rongai Route — Best May Route Overall

7 days from the north. The Rongai approach is the driest in May — the northern slopes receive less rainfall than the southern routes during the long rains. Lowest crowd levels on the mountain in May. Excellent acclimatisation profile.

Northern Circuit — Highest Success Rate, Empty in May

9 days. The longest route offers the most acclimatisation and the highest success rate in any month. In May, the Northern Circuit is nearly deserted. If you have 9 days, this is the May route.

Lemosho Route — Best Green-Season Photography

8 days. The western approach through the forest belt is spectacularly green in May. The longer itinerary provides good acclimatisation. The Lemosho-Shira route in May offers some of the most beautiful mountain photography available.

Marangu Route — The Most Affordable May Option

6 days. May on the Marangu route means dormitory-style huts (no camping in the rain) and the lowest price point. The Rongai equivalent is still preferable for weather, but Marangu is a solid May choice for budget-conscious climbers.

The Honest Assessment: May vs the Dry Season

Should you wait for June, July, or August? That depends on what matters most to you. The dry season offers more predictable weather. May offers a genuinely different experience — greener, quieter, more affordable — with weather that is better than most people expect.

If you are fixed on the dry-season experience, wait for June. If you want the best combination of value, solitude, and a dramatically beautiful mountain, May is it. Late May — after 20 May — is the sweet spot.

Mount Kilimanjaro Climb has been running May departures for over two decades. We have seen clients who chose May over August and were not disappointed once they reached the summit. The mountain is the same mountain. The experience is different — and for those who choose May, different turns out to mean better.

May Kilimanjaro — Common Questions

Is May a good time to climb Kilimanjaro?

Yes — May is one of Kilimanjaro's best-kept secrets. It is the last month of the long rainy season, which means the mountain is at its greenest, routes are nearly empty, and prices are at their lowest. Early May still has some rain, but by mid-month conditions improve significantly.

Does it rain on Kilimanjaro in May?

Yes, but less than April. May is the final month of the long rainy season. Early May can see rain in the forest zone (1,800-2,800m), but it diminishes through the month. Above 4,000m, conditions are largely dry. The rainforest is spectacularly green in May.

How crowded is Kilimanjaro in May?

Very uncrowded. May sits between the Easter climbing window and the June-September dry season. Rongai and Northern Circuit routes in particular have very few other groups in May — you will largely have the mountain to yourself.

Is May more affordable than other months?

Generally, yes. Some operators offer lower prices in May due to reduced demand. Park fees remain the same. Accommodation in Arusha before and after the climb is notably cheaper. Late-May departures are still viable — unlike Christmas or August, May does not fill up in advance.
