Climbing Kilimanjaro in Late March 2026

We are in the final 10 days of the dry season window. Here is what late March conditions actually look like right now — and what to do if your climb is imminent.

Late March 2026 — Where We Are Right Now

It is March 21, 2026. The long rains have begun on the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro. If you are departing on or after March 22, you will encounter wet forest trails, cloud in the moorland zone, and reduced visibility — but the summit remains achievable and conditions above 4,000m are still largely dry.

If your climb starts in the next 10 days, the most important thing you can do is pack for rain, accept the wet lower mountain, and focus on what you cannot control. Our guides are monitoring current conditions daily — contact us for a real-time conditions brief before you depart for Moshi.

If you are planning a March climb but have not yet booked, the window for dry-season conditions has effectively closed. April is the long rains in full force. The better call: plan for June, when the dry season re-establishes and crowd levels have not yet peaked.

March Weather by Altitude Zone — Late March Update

Rainforest Zone (1,800m to 2,800m)

Late March: wet and muddy. The forest zone is experiencing daily rainfall. Trails are slippery — trekking poles with rubber tips are strongly recommended. Waterproof gaiters are essential gear at this time. The forest is lush and beautiful even in rain.

Moorland Zone (2,800m to 4,000m)

Late March: cloud is persistent in this zone. Extended periods of reduced visibility are common. Not hazardous — the terrain is straightforward — but the experience is grey and damp compared to February. Dress in layers that handle moisture.

Alpine Desert (4,000m to 5,000m)

The alpine desert remains cold and dry. Conditions above 4,000m are not dramatically different from peak season — the long rains sit below this altitude. Summit approach visibility varies day to day.

Summit Zone (5,000m to 5,895m)

Summit temperatures: -10C to -20C. Late March nights can be clear — guides report that despite the lower mountain rain, summit windows in late March are still common. The Barafu to Stella Point ascent has been clear in several recent late-March climbs despite overcast conditions at camp.

Best Routes for Late March

Rongai Route

The clear best choice for late March. The northern approach near the Kenya border is in Kilimanjaro's rain shadow — it receives a fraction of the rainfall that southern routes experience. If you are climbing in the last 10 days of March, Rongai is our recommendation.

Lemosho Route

The western approach holds up better than Machame in wet conditions. The longer itinerary means more time at altitude where it is drier. A solid option for late March if you want the classic scenery.

Machame Route

Machame is climbable in late March — the mountain does not close. But expect wet forest trails, potentially muddy Barranco Wall descent, and reduced views from the southern slopes. Choose Machame in late March if you have no flexibility and understand the conditions.

The Honest Case for March

March is one of the quietest months on Kilimanjaro. For climbers who are indifferent to some lower-altitude cloud and want an uncrowded mountain, early March is genuinely attractive. The summit remains excellent. The guides are less stretched. The camps are spacious.

If your window is specifically late March — after the 20th — we will be honest with you: February or early March is better. The long rains are not catastrophic for the climb, but they are a real variable that February does not have. If you can move the dates, move them. If you cannot, choose Rongai, pack properly, and the mountain will still deliver.

Late March Kilimanjaro — Common Questions

Is late March 2026 a good time to climb Kilimanjaro?

It is a transitional window — not ideal, but entirely feasible. The long rains have begun on the southern slopes. The forest zone is wet, trails are muddy, and cloud is persistent below 4,000m. Summit conditions above 4,000m are still reasonable. Rongai Route in late March is a genuinely good option — the northern approach stays significantly drier.

Should I postpone my March climb to June?

If your climb is scheduled after March 25 and you have flexibility, yes — rescheduling to June is the better call. June offers the beginning of the long dry season with near-prime conditions and 30-40% fewer climbers than July-August. The difference in experience between a late-March southern-route climb and a June climb is significant.

How crowded is Kilimanjaro in late March?

The mountain is very quiet in late March. The Rongai Route in particular has had near-zero crowding. If you are comfortable with wet conditions and want the mountain largely to yourself, late March delivers that — but only if you choose Rongai. Southern routes in late March are also quiet.
