What to Expect Climbing Kilimanjaro in October

October is Kilimanjaro at a crossroads. The peak season crowds of July and August have dispersed. The long rains of March through May are months behind. The short rains of November are not yet a certainty. In this transitional window, you get something rare: a mountain that is quiet, routes that are available, and weather that is — more often than not — cooperative.

Summit success rates in October average 86% for our climbers. The slight dip from July is not due to dangerous conditions — it is due to slightly less predictable weather in the lower zones. Afternoon clouds rolling into the rainforest are common. The mountain above 3,500m is typically dry and clear. With a 7 or 8-day itinerary and an experienced guide team, October delivers a summit experience that rivals the high season at half the cost and a fraction of the crowding.

October Weather by Altitude Zone

October sits in the transitional period between Tanzania dry season (June-October) and the short rains (November). In practice, this means: the lower mountain (rainforest zone) can see afternoon clouds and occasional showers, particularly in the second half of the month. The upper mountain — moorland, alpine desert, and summit zone — is predominantly dry. The key difference from July is the cloud formation at mid-elevations, which can be dramatic and beautiful rather than obstructing.

Why October Deserves a Second Look

October gets overlooked because it sits outside the standard best time to climb narrative that focuses on June-July-August. But for climbers who are flexible on exact dates, October offers something those peak months cannot: availability. You can book your preferred route and dates with just 4-6 weeks notice. You are not competing with school holiday families or corporate groups. Your guide team is not burned out from six consecutive months of maximum-volume operations.

The value argument is strong. October pricing from most operators is 15-25% below July and August rates. Bobby Tours October climbs start from $1,895 for a 7-day Lemosho — versus $2,295 for the same itinerary in July. Permit availability is open. The mountain is in excellent condition after the dry season trail maintenance of June-September.

The mountain is photogenic in October in a different way than peak season. The cloud formations below you during the summit push — watching them light up orange and pink before the sun reaches the summit — are more dramatic in October than in the bone-dry clarity of July. The moorland zone is at its most lush, having absorbed the moisture of the earlier short rains patterns.

Which Route Is Best for October

October suits almost every route, with one exception: the Marangu Route — the Coca-Cola Route — is less ideal in October because its shorter itinerary (5-6 days) leaves less margin for weather variability. All other routes perform well.

RouteDurationCrowd LevelSuccess RateBest For
Northern Circuit8-9 daysVery Low95%Acclimatization-seekers, photographers, those who want the quietest route
Lemosho7-8 daysLow-Moderate93%First-timers and experienced climbers. Our most recommended October route.
Rongai6-7 daysLow87%Climbers entering via Kenya. Unique northern approach views.
Machame6-7 daysModerate91%Athletic first-timers comfortable with the Barranco Wall. Only for 7+ day itineraries in October.

Our October recommendation: The Lemosho Route in 8 days. The western approach through the Shira Plateau gives you the most dramatic scenery and the best acclimatization profile. Eight days in October means your summit push lands on day 7 or 8, with five full days of gentle ascent above 3,000m — the ideal altitude for the body to adjust.

October insider tip: The Northern Circuit is at its finest in October. The route circles the mountain on north-facing slopes — which in October catch less cloud and see more sun than the southern routes. 95% summit success rate and often fewer than 20 other groups on the entire route.

What to Pack Specifically for October

October packing is straightforward but differs from July in one key way: focus on breathable layers for the warm lower zones and genuinely warm layers for the cold summit night. Unlike July bone-dry cold, October can feel variable — you will warm up during the day on the trail and need to layer down quickly at camp.

  • Rain shell: A quality waterproof jacket is more important in October than in July. Look for a hardshell with fully taped seams. Rain showers in the forest zone are possible in the afternoon.
  • Summit layers: Down jacket rated to -20C, thermal base layers, insulated gloves, balaclava, sunglasses or goggles. Summit night is genuinely cold even in October.
  • Day hiking layers: Moisture-wicking shirts and convertible pants. You will be warm at lower altitudes — synthetic or merino base layers that manage sweat are essential.
  • Boots: Full-grain leather, broken in for at least 8 weeks before your climb. October trails are in good condition from the September dry season.
  • Sun protection: SPF 50+ and a wide-brim hat. UV at altitude in October is intense, and you will be exposed on the Shira Plateau and alpine desert.

Combine With a Safari — November Migration Begins

October transitions into November, when the short rains trigger the beginning of the Great Migration — wildebeest start moving from the short grass plains of the Serengeti toward the Mara River. A post-climb 3 or 4-day Serengeti safari captures the start of one of the world greatest wildlife spectacles — at off-season pricing.

From Moshi, the drive to the Serengeti takes approximately 6 hours. Most October climbers depart for safari the day after returning from the mountain — recovered enough to appreciate a dawn game drive. You summit on a Wednesday, are back at your Moshi hotel by Thursday morning, and in the Serengeti by Thursday afternoon watching the first columns of wildebeest moving north.

October Climbing FAQ

Is October a good month to climb Kilimanjaro?

October is a solid shoulder season month on Kilimanjaro. The short rains are unpredictable — some Octobers are almost entirely dry, others see occasional afternoon showers. Summit success rates average 86%. The real advantage is availability: routes, permits, and operators are far easier to secure than July or August, at significantly lower prices.

Does it rain on Kilimanjaro in October?

October is the start of the short rains season, so rainfall is possible but typically lighter and more intermittent than the long rains of March-May. Early October tends to be drier than late October. Afternoon clouds and occasional showers are common in the rainforest zone, but the upper mountain (above 3,500m) is often dry. A good waterproof layer is essential.

How crowded is Kilimanjaro in October?

October sees roughly 700-900 climbers — about half of July traffic. Crowds on the Machame Route are manageable. The Northern Circuit and Rongai routes are particularly quiet in October, making them excellent choices for a less populated climb. October is one of the few months where you can have a relatively solitary summit experience.

What is the summit success rate in October?

Bobby Tours achieves an 86% summit success rate for October climbs. The industry average for October is around 70%. The slight dip from peak months is due to slightly less predictable weather and occasional rainfall on lower sections — both manageable with proper preparation and a well-paced itinerary.

How warm is it on Kilimanjaro in October?

October temperatures are transitional — the base rainforest is warm at 22-28C during the day, while the summit zone remains cold at -15C to -20C during the pre-dawn summit push. Night temperatures at camp (3,000-4,600m) range from 0C to 8C. Compared to July, October nights are about 5-8C warmer at altitude.
