Climb Kilimanjaro in November 2026
Short rainy season. Rongai only. Quietest month of the year.
November is marginal — honest assessment first. The short rains have arrived. Conditions are transitional and wet. This is not the right month for most climbers. But if your schedule genuinely cannot move, and you are an experienced climber prepared for wet conditions, there is a specific, responsible way to climb Kilimanjaro in November. And it is only one route.
What November Actually Means on Kilimanjaro
November marks the beginning of Tanzania's short rainy season — a brief wet period between the long dry season (June–October) and the brief December dry window. The short rains are less intense than the long rains (April–May) but they are real. Daily rainfall is common, particularly in the second half of November. Trails are muddy. Visibility is reduced. Summit views are less reliable.
The critical point about November: the rains are intermittent, not constant. There are dry stretches within November. Morning climbs can be dry even when rain comes in the afternoon. This means an experienced climber who monitors weather and is prepared to be flexible has a real — if marginal — chance of a successful climb. But this is not the month for a first attempt or a rigid schedule.

November moorland — wet but still hikeable, with a raw green beauty unique to this time of year
November Conditions by Altitude Zone
Rainforest Zone (1,800m – 2,800m)
Wet and humid. November forest zone sees regular rainfall. Trails are muddy — not impassable, but consistently wet. This is the most challenging zone in November: wet feet for days, high humidity, slippery sections. Waterproof boots and gaiters are essential. The positive: the forest is extraordinarily green and beautiful in November. Photographers appreciate what the rain brings to the landscape.
Moorland Zone (2,800m – 4,000m)
Changeable. November moorland is above the main rain zone on many days — morning starts can be clear even when the forest zone is wet. Afternoon cloud and rain are common. Trail conditions are mixed — firm in places, muddy in others. This zone is more manageable than the forest zone but still requires wet-weather preparedness. Visibility is less reliable than dry season.
Alpine Desert & Summit (4,000m – 5,895m)
Cold and variable. November summit conditions are less predictable than dry-season months. Cloud cover on summit night is a real risk — you may reach the summit without the view you came for. Summit night temperatures: -12C to -22C. The cold is less extreme than August/September, but the cloud risk means the payoff is less certain. This is the honest trade-off of November climbing.
November Route Recommendation
Rongai Route Only — Northern Route in the Rain Shadow
There is only one responsible November route: Rongai. The northern approach sits in the rain shadow of Kilimanjaro and receives significantly less rainfall than southern routes. Early November Rongai (7 or 8 days) gives you a genuine — if marginal — chance of a successful climb. All southern routes are genuinely difficult in November conditions. We do not recommend Machame, Lemosho, Marangu, or Umbwe for November climbs.

The Genuine Case for November
November is the quietest month on Kilimanjaro — you may have entire camps to yourself. This is a different mountain from the crowded peak-season experience. For experienced climbers who have done this before and understand exactly what wet-season climbing involves, November offers something rare: solitude on Africa's highest peak.
November has other advantages: the forest zone is extraordinarily beautiful after the short rains — vivid green, waterfalls at their fullest, exceptional photography conditions. Pricing is typically lower than peak season. And there is something to be said for the raw honesty of a November climb — no illusions about conditions, no optimistic marketing. Just you, the mountain, and the weather.
Our honest recommendation: if you are a first-time climber, choose January, February, June, July, August, September, or October. If you are an experienced climber who has trained for wet conditions and has a genuine schedule constraint, early November on Rongai is a real — if marginal — option.
November Kilimanjaro — Common Questions
Is November a good time to climb Kilimanjaro?
November is marginal — not ideal. The short rains have arrived and conditions are wet and transitional. Early November (1st–15th) can still deliver a viable climb on Rongai, but late November is genuinely difficult. We only recommend November for experienced climbers with genuine schedule constraints. If you have any flexibility, choose January, February, June, July, August, September, or October.
What are November summit success rates on Kilimanjaro?
November success rates: Rongai (1st–15th): 65–75%, Rongai (20th–30th): 50–62%, Northern Circuit (early November only): 70–80%, Machame/Lemosho: 45–62%. The wide range reflects within-month variability — conditions deteriorate as November progresses. Early November is meaningfully better than late November.
Which route is best for Kilimanjaro in November?
Rongai Route — without question. It approaches from the dry northern face and sits in the rain shadow. Early November Rongai (7 or 8 days) is the only November itinerary we recommend. All southern routes (Machame, Lemosho, Marangu, Umbwe) are genuinely difficult in November wet conditions. We do not recommend them.
What are the advantages of climbing Kilimanjaro in November?
Genuine advantages: the mountain is at its absolute quietest (you may have camps to yourself), the forest zone is extraordinarily green and beautiful, November pricing is typically lower than peak season, and for photographers the post-rain landscape is exceptional. If you are an experienced climber who understands the risks, November has a raw beauty that peak season does not.
Should I wait for December or another month instead of November?
If your schedule allows any flexibility, yes — wait. December has a brief dry window and is marginally better than November. January starts the new dry season and is excellent. The best months: January, February, June, July, August, September, and October. Only choose November if your schedule genuinely cannot move and you are prepared for wet conditions on Rongai.
Climbing Kilimanjaro in November?
November is only for experienced climbers with genuine schedule constraints. If you are committed to November, we will tell you honestly whether it is the right call — and if it is, how to give yourself the best summit chance on Rongai.
