Climb Kilimanjaro in May 2026
Deep rainy season. Rongai is the only viable route. Honest rates and advice.
May is not the right month for most climbers. The long rains are in full force. But if your schedule demands a May climb — or if you have flexibility and want the lowest crowds and best safari conditions of the year — here is exactly what you are signing up for, and how to give yourself the best possible chance of reaching Uhuru Peak.
What May Actually Means on Kilimanjaro
May is the second month of Tanzania's long rains (April and May). Unlike April — which starts dry and transitions — May begins wet and stays wet. The forest zone receives heavy daily rainfall. Trails are muddy and slippery on all southern approaches. Summit views are frequently obscured by cloud. These are simply the conditions.
The one genuine exception is the Rongai Route on the northern face. The northern slopes sit in the rain shadow of Kilimanjaro's main mass. They receive perhaps 20–30% of the rainfall that southern routes experience. For May climbers who understand what they are taking on, Rongai in early May is not reckless — it is the considered, informed choice. See our full Rongai Route guide for itinerary details.

Above 3,500m, May conditions are cold and clear — the rain zone sits below.
May Conditions by Altitude Zone
Rainforest Zone (1,800m – 2,800m)
Heavy daily rainfall is a certainty in May. Trails are genuinely muddy — not damp, but muddy in a way that makes every step harder. Your boots will be wet all day. This is the defining challenge of May Kilimanjaro. No amount of waterproof gear eliminates the physical toll of wet lower slopes.
Moorland Zone (2,800m – 4,000m)
The heather zone is above the main cloud layer on most days in May. Morning starts are often clear. Afternoon cloud builds but is not guaranteed to bring rain. Trail conditions are significantly better than the forest zone — firm ground, good footing. This is where May climbs can surprise you.
Alpine Desert & Summit (4,000m – 5,895m)
Above 4,000m, May is not dramatically different from any other month of the year. Cold, dry air, clear nights, excellent star visibility. Summit night temperatures: -18C to -25C. The weather lottery is summit views — in May, late-afternoon cloud can roll up from the south and obscure the summit views on summit night. Early-morning summit departures mitigate this risk.

May Route Recommendation
Rongai Route — The Only Viable Option in May
The Rongai Route is not just our recommendation for May — it is effectively the only responsible option. Approaching from the north, near the Kenya border, it sits in Kilimanjaro's rain shadow. May Rongai is a materially different experience from May southern routes. The 8-day itinerary provides better acclimatization than the 7-day, which matters more in wet conditions where cumulative fatigue is higher.

The Hidden Opportunity: May Is One of Tanzania Best Safari Months
Here is what the travel industry does not advertise: May is a superb month for a Tanzania safari. The long rains have greened the parks. Wildlife concentrates around permanent water sources. Predators are more active. The Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire are at their most beautiful — and almost empty of tourists.
Lodge and camp prices in May are 25–40% below peak-season rates. You get the same — actually better — wildlife viewing conditions for significantly less money. Our recommendation: climb Kilimanjaro in early May (Rongai, 8-day), recover in Arusha for a day, then do a 3-4 day safari while the parks are at their most beautiful and most affordable.

You should not climb Kilimanjaro in May if:
- You want clear summit views — May cloud cover on summit night is a genuine risk
- You are a first-time high-altitude trekker — May conditions compound the altitude challenge
- Your schedule allows June, July, September, or October — all significantly better months
- You have not trained specifically for wet, muddy, multi-day hiking
- You are on a tight schedule where a failed summit would be devastating — the odds are lower

May Kilimanjaro — Common Questions
Is May a good time to climb Kilimanjaro?
May is the second-wettest month on Kilimanjaro after April. We will be direct: May is not an ideal climbing month. However, the northern Rongai Route in early to mid-May can still deliver a viable climb. Late May success rates drop further. If your schedule is flexible, June, July, September, and October are all significantly better choices.
Which route works best in May?
Rongai Route is the only route we recommend for May. It approaches from the dry northern face and receives a fraction of the rainfall that southern routes experience. The 7-day or 8-day Rongai itinerary in early May can work. All southern routes — Machame, Lemosho, Marangu, Umbwe — are genuinely difficult and low-success in May conditions. See our route guides: Rongai, Machame, Lemosho.
What are May summit success rates on Kilimanjaro?
May success rates: Rongai (1st–15th): 65–75%. Rongai (16th–31st): 50–60%. Southern routes any time in May: 35–50%. These are meaningfully lower than dry-season rates (85–95%). The cumulative fatigue of wet lower-slope hiking leaves less physical and mental reserve for summit night.
What should I pack for a May Kilimanjaro climb?
Full wet-season kit is mandatory for May: fully waterproof jacket with hood, waterproof over-trousers, double-layer waterproof gloves, dry bags for all electronics and documents, gaiters, and moisture-wicking base layers that stay warm when damp. Budget extra socks — wet feet at altitude lead rapidly to blisters and cold injury. This is not optional kit; it is the difference between a viable climb and a miserable one.
Should I combine a May Kilimanjaro climb with a safari?
May is one of Tanzania's finest safari months — this is the insight most operators miss. The same weather pattern that makes the mountain wet fills the Serengeti and Ngorongoro with exceptional wildlife viewing conditions. Lush green parks, low crowds, predator-rich game viewing, and dramatically lower prices than peak season. Climb the mountain in early May, safari the parks in mid-to-late May.
