Climb Kilimanjaro in March 2026

Transitional month. Early March may work. Late March: wait for June.

March is a transitional month — honest assessment first. If your schedule is flexible, choose April (not recommended), May (not recommended), or June (excellent). If you are locked into March because of school holidays or other constraints, here is exactly what you are dealing with, and how to give yourself the best possible summit chance.

What March Actually Means on Kilimanjaro

March marks the end of the dry season and the transition toward the long rains. The first rains typically arrive in late March — sometimes the 3rd week, sometimes the 4th week. The transition is gradual, not sudden: early March is still essentially a dry-season month, while late March sees increasing afternoon rainfall.

The critical factor in March is route choice. Southern routes (Machame, Lemosho, Marangu, Umbwe) cross the wet southern face of the mountain and deteriorate rapidly once the rains begin. Northern routes (Rongai, Northern Circuit) sit in the rain shadow and remain significantly drier. If you are climbing in March, it must be on Rongai — no exceptions.

Kilimanjaro forest zone — March conditions vary dramatically from dry early month to wet late March

Forest zone in early March — still dry enough for viable hiking, but the season is ending

March Conditions by Altitude Zone

Rainforest Zone (1,800m – 2,800m)

Early March: dry and comfortable. Late March: increasingly wet with muddy trails. The forest zone is the first to show the transition. By the 3rd week of March, expect daily afternoon rainfall in the forest. This is not a dealbreaker — proper rain gear handles it — but it adds physical and mental fatigue that compounds over multiple days.

Moorland Zone (2,800m – 4,000m)

March moorland is above the main rain zone on most days. Morning starts are often clear. Afternoon cloud builds but rain at this altitude is less frequent than in the forest. The moorland zone is the most reliable zone in March — the zone where March conditions are closest to dry-season conditions. However, visibility is less reliable than in January/February.

Alpine Desert & Summit (4,000m – 5,895m)

March summit conditions are cold and clear when they are clear — but cloud cover is more frequent than in the dry months. Summit night temperatures: -15C to -25C. The key risk in March is afternoon cloud rolling up from the south on summit night, obscuring the sunrise view. Early-morning summit departures (around midnight to 1am) partially mitigate this risk.

March Route Recommendation

Rongai Route Only — Northern Route Is the Only Viable Choice

There is only one responsible route recommendation for March: Rongai. The northern approach sits in Kilimanjaro's rain shadow. It receives a fraction of the rainfall that southern routes experience. Early March Rongai can deliver a genuinely good climb. We would not book any southern route for March — the conditions are significantly worse than operators' optimistic descriptions typically suggest.

When March Is the Wrong Call

You should not book a March Kilimanjaro climb if:

  • You want clear summit views — March cloud cover risk is significantly higher than January/February
  • You are a first-time high-altitude trekker — wet conditions compound the altitude challenge
  • Your schedule allows June, July, August, September, or October — all significantly better months
  • You are booking a southern route (Machame, Lemosho, Marangu) for late March — the conditions will be difficult
  • A failed summit would be devastating — the odds are meaningfully lower than dry season

If your schedule is flexible: June, July, September, and October are all significantly better choices than March.

March Kilimanjaro — Common Questions

Is March a good time to climb Kilimanjaro?

March is transitional — not ideal, but not impossible. Early March (1st–15th) on the Rongai Route is genuinely viable. Late March sees increasing rainfall and we do not recommend it. If your schedule is flexible, choose June or later in the dry season. If you are locked into March due to school holidays, early March on Rongai is the only responsible choice.

What are March summit success rates on Kilimanjaro?

March success rates vary significantly within the month: Rongai (1st–15th): 70–80%, Rongai (20th–31st): 55–65%, Northern Circuit (early March only): 75–85%, Machame/Lemosho (early March): 60–72%, Southern routes (late March): 35–50%. The wide range reflects how much conditions change through the month.

Which route is best for Kilimanjaro in March?

Rongai Route — without question. It approaches from the dry northern face and sits in Kilimanjaro's rain shadow. Early March Rongai (7 or 8 days) is the only March route we confidently recommend. All southern routes (Machame, Lemosho, Marangu, Umbwe) deteriorate rapidly in March and we do not recommend them.

What happens if it rains on my March Kilimanjaro climb?

March rainfall typically arrives in the afternoons — mornings are often clear. This means core hiking hours can still be dry in early March. However: muddy trails, reduced visibility, slippery sections, and wet gear all add fatigue that compounds over multiple days. The cumulative effect on summit night readiness is the real risk of a wet-season climb.

Should I wait for June instead of March?

If your schedule is at all flexible, absolutely yes. June is the start of the new dry season and an excellent month. July and August are peak season with the best conditions of the year. September and October are equally excellent. The difference between a March climb and a June climb in terms of success rate and experience quality is substantial.

Climbing Kilimanjaro in March?

March is viable only on the Rongai Route, and only in early March. If your schedule allows, we strongly recommend June instead. But if March is what you have, we will tell you honestly whether it is the right call for you.
