Climb Kilimanjaro in January 2026
Peak dry season. Clear summit views. High success rates. Here is exactly what to expect.
January is Kilimanjaro at its absolute finest. The dry season delivers the most reliable conditions of any time of year. Clear mornings, firm trails, high success rates. If you have one shot at this climb, January gives you the best possible chance of reaching Uhuru Peak with a view.
What January Actually Means on Kilimanjaro
January falls squarely in Kilimanjaro's dry season (June–October, with a brief wet window in November). The rains have ended. The mountain is dry, the skies are clear, and the trails are in excellent condition. This is peak season — the mountain is busy, prices are at their highest, and you need to book well in advance. But the conditions are as close to guaranteed as Kilimanjaro gets.
Summit views on clear January mornings are genuinely extraordinary. The Rongai and Northern Circuit routes in particular offer outstanding visibility. If you want the classic Kilimanjaro experience — bright blue skies, stunning summit dawn, clear views in every direction — January is the month.

January Conditions by Altitude Zone
Rainforest Zone (1,800m – 2,800m)
Warm and humid but dry. January trails in the forest zone are firm and muddy only in isolated patches. The previous wet season's vegetation is lush. Wildlife is visible — colobus monkeys, birds, endemic flora. The main challenge is heat and humidity at lower elevations, not trail conditions.
Moorland Zone (2,800m – 4,000m)
Comfortable hiking conditions. January moorland is dry underfoot with stunning views in every direction. Morning starts are cold (0–5C) but warm quickly. Afternoon temperatures: 10–18C. This is the most pleasant zone to hike in January — firm ground, big skies, heather and rock formations at their most beautiful.
Alpine Desert & Summit (4,000m – 5,895m)
January is the prime month for summit views. Clear night skies mean cold temperatures but extraordinary visibility. Summit night: -15C to -25C with near-zero humidity. On clear mornings, you can see Mount Kenya to the north, the curvature of the earth on the horizon. Summit temperature inversions — where warm air traps cloud below you — are possible and spectacular.
January Route Recommendation
All Routes Work Well — Lemosho and Machame Are Most Popular
January is one of the few months where any route is genuinely viable. The dry conditions remove the route-specific constraints that dominate wet-season climbing. Machame and Lemosho are the most popular for good reason — well-supported, high-success, spectacular scenery. For the highest success rate, the Northern Circuit 9-day delivers 90–96% summit rates in January conditions.

Combine Your January Climb with a Safari
January is peak safari season in Tanzania. The short rains ended in December, the grass is short, and wildlife concentrates around water sources. The Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire are at their best — and this is the busiest safari season for a reason. Most climbers add 3–5 days of safari after summitting.
Our most popular January itinerary: Lemosho 8-day climb + 4-day Serengeti safari. Summit Kilimanjaro, recover in Arusha, then experience the world's greatest wildlife show. January safari conditions are exceptional — you will see the Great Migration calving season depending on exact dates.
