Climb Kilimanjaro in February 2026
Short dry season. January conditions without the crowds. Our top recommendation.
February is Kilimanjaro's best-kept secret. It has all the dry-season advantages of January — clear skies, firm trails, high success rates — with a fraction of the crowds. If you want the best conditions of the year without fighting the New Year peak, February is your month.
What February Actually Means on Kilimanjaro
February sits in the short dry season — a meteorological window between the January peak and the March onset of the wet pattern. In most years, February receives minimal rainfall. The trails are dry, the skies are clear, and the climbing conditions are excellent. This is the sweet spot: peak-season quality with shoulder-season crowd levels.
The one nuance: late February (after the 20th) begins to see increased cloud formation, particularly on southern routes. This does not make February unsafe or unsuccessful — it simply means that if you have flexibility, early-to-mid-February offers the most consistent conditions. By late February, monitor weather forecasts more closely.

February Conditions by Altitude Zone
Rainforest Zone (1,800m – 2,800m)
Warm and dry. February forest zone trails are firm with no significant mud. Humidity is moderate — not the oppressive wet-season damp. This is comfortable hiking territory: wear lightweight layers, stay hydrated, protect against sun exposure. Wildlife viewing is excellent — colobus monkeys, birds, and endemic plants are active in the dry conditions.
Moorland Zone (2,800m – 4,000m)
February moorland is at its finest. Dry ground, outstanding visibility, giant heather and lobelia against blue skies. Morning temperatures: 0–5C, warming to 12–18C by midday. This is active hiking weather — layers that you can add and remove as temperature changes. Afternoon cloud builds but rarely brings rain in February.
Alpine Desert & Summit (4,000m – 5,895m)
February is excellent for summit conditions. Clear nights mean very cold temperatures — -18C to -28C on summit night — but also the most spectacular star skies you will ever see. The likelihood of a clear summit dawn is high by February standards. Late February sees slightly more cloud risk than early February, but overall February ranks among the best months for summit views.
February Route Recommendation
Rongai or Northern Circuit — Skip the Southern Crowds
February's quieter conditions make it ideal for routes that are less frequently chosen. Rongai from the north is consistently dry, quiet, and successful in February. The Northern Circuit — the most scenic and highest-success route — has noticeably lower February traffic than January. We particularly recommend the 9-day Northern Circuit for February: world-class conditions, fewer people, 90–95% summit rate.

February Trade-Off: Timing Within the Month
Early February (1st–15th) offers the most reliable conditions — essentially identical to late January. Success rates are at their February peak. The mountain is quieter than the New Year rush.
Late February (20th–28th) sees increased cloud development and a slight uptick in afternoon precipitation risk on southern routes. This does not make late February a bad choice — many successful climbs happen in this window — but it is worth noting when planning. We recommend booking early February if your schedule is flexible.
Bottom line: February as a whole is excellent. Early February is exceptional. Late February is still very good — better than most other months.
