HOTELS NEAR KILIMANJARO

Moshi or Arusha? Budget guesthouse or luxury lodge? Complete guide to where to stay before and after your Kilimanjaro climb — with exact distances to every mountain gate.

Published: March 26, 2026|By Mount Kilimanjaro Climb|Updated: March 26, 2026

Where you sleep the night before your Kilimanjaro climb matters more than most climbers realise. The right hotel can mean the difference between a well-rested summit attempt and a difficult first day on the mountain. This guide covers every town, every budget level, and every question you should ask before booking.

Key facts: Moshi town sits at 890m elevation, 30-45 minutes from the Machame, Lemosho, and Umbwe gates. Arusha sits at 1,400m elevation, 90 minutes from these same gates. Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is equidistant between both — about 60km from each.

WHY WHERE YOU STAY MATTERS

Kilimanjaro climbs fail for many reasons — altitude, weather, fitness — but a surprising number of failed summit attempts trace back to a poor night's sleep before the climb even starts. Jet lag, unfamiliar beds, noisy streets, and poor food hygiene can all compromise your body's readiness for altitude.

The two main gateway towns — Moshi and Arusha — each offer a distinctly different pre-climb experience. Choosing the right one, and the right hotel within that town, is one of the easiest optimisations you can make for your summit chances.

STAYING IN MOSHI TOWN

Moshi is the climbing capital of Tanzania. At the foot of Kilimanjaro with unobstructed views of the mountain from most rooftop restaurants, Moshi is where serious climbers stay before and after their attempt. The town has a compact, walkable centre and a range of accommodation from backpacker hostels to comfortable mid-range hotels.

The key advantage of Moshi: you are as close to the mountain as possible without sleeping on the slopes. On climb morning, your transfer to the gate is typically 30-45 minutes. This means you can wake at a normal hour and eat a proper breakfast before heading up.

What to expect at Moshi hotels

  • Most hotels offer free transfer to the Machame, Lemosho, and Umbwe gates
  • Mountain views from rooftop restaurants are standard — Kilimanjaro is visible on clear mornings
  • Hot water is generally available, though pressure can be inconsistent at budget options
  • Food safety standards have improved significantly in the past decade; stick to your hotel restaurant for your last pre-climb dinner
  • Shops selling climbing gear, water bottles, and basic supplies are within walking distance of most hotels

STAYING IN ARUSHA TOWN

Arusha is Tanzania's safari capital — the gateway to Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, and every other major park in the northern circuit. If you are combining a Kilimanjaro climb with a safari, Arusha makes logistical sense. The town sits at a higher elevation (1,400m), which means you start your climb slightly more acclimatised.

The tradeoff is distance. The drive from Arusha to the Machame Gate takes 90 minutes to 2 hours depending on traffic and road conditions. For early-morning summit attempts on the Lemosho or Machame routes, this means a very early wake-up call — typically 5:00 AM or earlier.

Arusha hotels: what to consider

  • Arusha has more international hotel chains and consistently higher service standards than Moshi
  • If you are flying into JRO airport (Kilimanjaro International), Arusha is often more convenient for the first night
  • Budget at least $30-$50 extra for the gate transfer if your operator charges separately
  • Arusha's higher elevation gives a marginal acclimatisation head-start — about 500m higher than Moshi
  • For climbs departing from the Rongai Gate (near the Kenyan border), Arusha is actually closer than Moshi

YOUR PRE-CLIMB NIGHT: OPTIMISE YOUR SLEEP

The night before your climb is not the time to push yourself. Here is what we recommend to every climber who books with Mount Kilimanjaro Climb:

  1. 1

Arrive in Moshi at least one full day before your climb start date

This gives you time to recover from travel, adjust to the altitude (890m), and meet your guides for a proper pre-climb briefing.

  2. 2

    Eat an early, light dinner

Heavy food close to sleep disrupts your body's overnight recovery. A light meal of grilled fish or chicken with rice and vegetables is ideal. Avoid alcohol completely — it impairs acclimatisation.

  3. 3

Drink extra water throughout the afternoon and evening

Hydration is critical at altitude. Moshi is already significantly drier than coastal Tanzania. Aim for 2-3 litres of water in the hours before sleep.

  4. 4

Sleep at a normal time — ideally 9:00–10:00 PM

You will be waking early. A full 7-8 hours of sleep before a pre-dawn alarm gives your body the best possible start.

  5. 5

Confirm your hotel wake-up call and breakfast time with the front desk the evening before

Most Kilimanjaro climbs depart between 6:00 and 8:00 AM. You need to be eating breakfast by 6:00 AM, which means wake-up at 5:00 AM at the latest.

COMBINING KILIMANJARO WITH A SAFARI

Many climbers add a Tanzania safari after their Kilimanjaro summit — partly as a reward, partly because the contrast between the mountain and the plains is one of Tanzania's greatest travel experiences. If you are planning a Kilimanjaro-and-safari combo, your hotel strategy changes.

The logical sequence is: Moshi (pre-climb) → Mountain → Moshi (recovery) → Safari → Arusha or Dar (departure). Most operators offer a combined package where your hotel in Moshi serves as both the pre-climb base and the post-climb recovery point. We recommend 1-2 nights in Moshi after your descent before heading to the national parks.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the best town to stay in before climbing Kilimanjaro?

Moshi is the best town to stay in before climbing Kilimanjaro. It sits at the foot of the mountain at 890m elevation, just 30-45 minutes from the Machame, Lemosho, and Umbwe gate entrances. Arusha is a better option if you are coming from Dar es Salaam by plane — it has an international airport and more hotel variety — but you will add 90 minutes of driving to reach the mountain gates.

How far in advance should I book my Kilimanjaro hotel?

Book your pre-climb hotel at least 2-3 months before your climb, especially during the peak seasons of June-October and December-February. During these periods, availability can be very limited. Budget travellers should note that some budget guesthouses in Moshi have very few rooms and fill quickly with climbing groups.

Should I stay in Moshi or Arusha for a Kilimanjaro climb?

Choose Moshi if proximity to the mountain is your priority — you will be closer to the Machame, Lemosho, Rongai, and Umbwe gates. Choose Arusha if you want more hotel variety, better restaurants, or are combining your climb with a safari, as Arusha is the gateway to Serengeti and Ngorongoro. Most operators including Mount Kilimanjaro Climb provide transport from either town to all mountain gates.

Is it safe to drink the tap water in Moshi and Arusha hotels?

No. Tap water in both Moshi and Arusha is not reliably safe for drinking. All hotels and guesthouses in our guide provide filtered or bottled water for guests. We recommend asking your hotel about their water supply before arrival and always using bottled or filtered water for drinking and brushing your teeth during your stay.

Do Kilimanjaro hotels offer airport transfers?

Most mid-range and luxury hotels near Kilimanjaro offer airport transfer services, typically charging $40-$80 for a one-way transfer from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) near Arusha. Budget guesthouses in Moshi usually do not include transfers but can arrange a taxi for $25-$40. Mount Kilimanjaro Climb includes all ground transfers between hotels, airport, and mountain gates as part of our climb packages.
