Kilimanjaro Gear — Rent or Buy?

What to rent in Arusha. What to bring from home. What Mount Kilimanjaro Climb provides. The practical breakdown.

What Mount Kilimanjaro Climb Provides

Your Mount Kilimanjaro Climb climb includes all group camping equipment: mess tent, dining tables and chairs, cooking equipment, and toilet tent. Porters carry all group gear. You are responsible for your personal equipment — what you sleep in, what you wear, and what you carry in your day pack.

Bring from Home

Trekking boots (broken in — non-negotiable)
Thermal base layers (top and bottom)
Mid-layer fleece
Waterproof jacket and trousers
Summit gloves and liner gloves
Warm hat (covers ears)
Sunglasses (UV protection, not fashion)
Sunscreen SPF 50+
Personal first aid and medication
Water bottles or hydration system

The One Item You Cannot Rent: Boots

Boots are the single item you should never rent for Kilimanjaro. The reason is simple: boots that have not been broken in cause blisters. Blisters on summit night can end a climb. Rental boots have been worn by other people and fit no one optimally.

Bring your own mid to high ankle waterproof trekking boots. Wear them on at least 5 to 8 multi-hour walks before your climb — including one that mirrors summit night conditions: cold, overnight, descending steep terrain. This preparation matters more than any other gear decision you make.

Sleeping Bag — Buy or Rent?

If you already own a sleeping bag rated to -10C or colder, bring it. If you do not, renting in Arusha is the practical choice. The rental cost for a full climb ($20 to $40) is a fraction of buying a quality expedition bag ($150 to $400). Only buy if you plan to use the bag for future cold-weather camping.

One caveat: inspect any rental bag carefully before accepting it. Check for damage to the zip, check that the fill is not compressed in patches, and confirm the temperature rating matches your departure month. Mount Kilimanjaro Climb can advise on reputable rental sources in Arusha.
