How Bobby Tours Times Your Climb to the Lunar Cycle
We have been scheduling full moon departures since 1978. The calculation is not complicated, but it is precise: moonrise and moonset times at Kibo summit altitude (5,895m) differ from ground-level times by approximately 3–4 minutes due to horizon elevation. We use astronomical data for the summit altitude, not Moshi or Arusha.
The standard departure model: arrive Arusha two days before the full moon. Summit camp (Kibo Hut on Rongai; Barafu on Machame) by the afternoon of the full moon day. Depart for the summit at approximately 11 PM — 1 hour after moonrise at summit altitude. This places the final 1,200 vertical metres of the ascent directly under the highest, brightest moon.

Full moon departures on Rongai and Northern Circuit fill 3–4 months out. The January and August departures typically sell out by October of the prior year.
