Route Experience

Your First Day on Kilimanjaro

Machame Gate to Machame Camp — hour by hour. What to expect, what surprises people, and how to start well.

The Night Before

Your climb begins the evening before the trail. Your guide will run a kit check — going through your gear to confirm you have the essentials and to redistribute anything that belongs in your porter's load rather than your daypack. This is also when you meet the crew: your lead guide, assistant guides, cook, and porters.

Sleep as early as you can. The drive to Machame Gate leaves at 07:00 or 07:30. First-day nerves are normal. They pass within the first hour on the trail.

Day 1 — Hour by Hour

07:00 — Departure from Arusha

Transfer from your hotel to Machame Gate. The drive takes approximately 90 minutes via the Moshi road, passing through Arusha's outskirts and into the lower slopes. The gate sits at 1,800m in the farming zone below the forest. Bring snacks for the drive.

08:30 — Machame Gate Registration

At the gate, your guide handles park permit registration while porters sort and weigh loads (maximum 20kg per porter). This takes 30 to 60 minutes. Use the time to apply sunscreen, adjust your daypack, and use the toilet facilities — the first camp has basic facilities, but the gate is your last chance at anything approximating comfort for a while.

09:30 — Trail Begins

The trail enters the montane rainforest immediately. Tall trees, dense undergrowth, the sound of birds you cannot see. The path is wide and well-worn. Mud is common — gaiters earn their place in the first hour. The forest section runs from 1,800m to around 2,800m and is the most visually dense part of the mountain.

11:30 — The Forest Deepens

By mid-morning you are deep in the forest canopy. Giant heather and Hagenia trees dominate. Colobus monkeys are often audible and occasionally visible high in the canopy. The trail climbs steadily — no steep scrambles on Day 1, just sustained gradient. Your guide sets the pace: pole pole.

13:00 — Lunch Stop

Your crew will have hiked ahead to prepare a packed lunch at a rest point along the trail. This is your first experience of Mount Kilimanjaro Climb' mountain meals — substantial, warm, and more than you might expect at 2,400m. Eat everything. Your body needs fuel at altitude more than it sends hunger signals.

15:30 — Forest Edge

The forest begins to thin as you approach the upper limit of the canopy. Giant heather replaces the taller trees. Views open briefly. You are now above 2,800m — your first altitude benchmark. Take it slowly here. This is where some climbers start to feel the first faint effects of altitude.

16:00 — Machame Camp (3,000m)

Camp appears through the heather. Your tents are already pitched. The cook has hot tea and popcorn waiting. The first thing most climbers notice is the view — on clear days, Kibo's southern ice fields are visible above camp for the first time. The second thing most notice is how their legs feel.

The First Evening at Camp

After arriving at Machame Camp, your guide will check in with each climber — asking about energy levels, any headaches or nausea, and confirming how everyone is feeling. This is the first of twice-daily health checks that continue throughout the climb.

Dinner is served in the dining tent at around 18:30 — three courses, hot drinks, and more food than most people expect to find at 3,000m on a mountain. Eat. Hydrate. The single most important thing you can do on Day 1 evening is drink two litres of water before sleeping.

Lights out by 20:00 or 21:00. Day 2 departs at around 07:30 for the moorland section and the Shira Plateau.

What Surprises People on Day 1

The gate registration takes longer than expected — build patience into the morning

The forest is wetter than anticipated even in dry season — boots get damp

The crew moves faster than the climbers — porters pass you on the trail carrying 20kg loads

Altitude at 3,000m is already noticeable for some — mild headache, reduced appetite

Camp is more established than expected — tents, dining tent, cook crew, hot meals

How tired legs feel after a sustained 1,200m ascent — this is normal and recovers overnight

Day 1 Questions

What happens on Day 1 of the Machame Route?

Drive from Arusha to Machame Gate (07:00), gate registration (08:30-09:30), then 5 to 7 hours of trekking through montane rainforest from 1,800m to Machame Camp at 3,000m. Total distance around 11 km. Camp is established with tents and meals ready on arrival.

How difficult is Day 1 on Kilimanjaro?

Moderate — a long, steady ascent with no technical sections. The key is pace. Starting too fast on Day 1 is the most common first-day mistake. Pole pole applies from the first step.

What is Machame Camp like?

Machame Camp sits at 3,000m at the forest-moorland transition. Your crew sets up camp before you arrive — tents pitched, dining tent ready, hot tea waiting. The first evening includes a guide health check, dinner, and early sleep.
