Climbing Kilimanjaro in February

Dry skies, quiet trails, clear summits. February is one of Kilimanjaro's best-kept secrets.

Why February Works

February sits in the short dry season — the window between the short rains (November to mid-December) and the long rains (March to May). This makes it one of the two prime dry-season windows on Kilimanjaro, alongside January. Conditions are reliable, skies are clear, and the mountain is significantly quieter than July or August.

The forest zone is at its most beautiful in February — lush and green from the December rains, but dry underfoot and clear overhead. Above 4,000m the alpine desert and summit conditions are as good as any month on the mountain.

February is also the warmest month at Kilimanjaro summit level. Summit night temperatures typically range from -10C to -20C — compared to -15C to -25C in July and August. This matters. At -20C with wind, frostbite risk on exposed skin is significant within minutes. At -10C, the same exposure is manageable for considerably longer. For climbers who are concerned about summit-night cold exposure, February's marginally warmer summit temperatures are a meaningful practical advantage.

February Weather by Altitude Zone

Rainforest Zone (1,800m to 2,800m)

Dry and green. Trail conditions are good. Some morning mist is normal for this zone but rain is rare. The forest is at its most photogenic in February — dense vegetation, clear light, no mud.

Moorland Zone (2,800m to 4,000m)

Clear mornings, light cloud building in the afternoon. Excellent views toward Mawenzi and the southern plains. February moorland days are among the best of the year.

Alpine Desert (4,000m to 5,000m)

Cold, dry, and stable. Minimal cloud, strong UV, excellent visibility. Summit preparation conditions are excellent.

Summit Zone (5,000m to 5,895m)

Summit temperatures: -10C to -20C at night. Winds are generally lower than the main dry season. Summit visibility is consistently excellent in February. Some years, February delivers the clearest summit skies of the year.

February Trail Conditions — What to Expect

February trails on Kilimanjaro are in excellent condition. The forest zone has dried from January's post-rains period — no mud, good footing, clear paths. The moorland and alpine desert zones are at their driest since July. Summit snow from January may linger in shaded areas above 5,000m but does not affect trail conditions on any of the standard approaches.

Visibility on summit morning in February is consistently excellent. Our guides report that February summits produce clear views of the crater, the glaciers, and the surrounding Kenyan and Tanzanian plains in a high proportion of departures. The atmospheric clarity of the post-short-rains dry season, combined with the lower dust levels of the early calendar year, produces some of the best summit visibility of the annual cycle.
