Summit Guide
Climb Kilimanjaro in December 2026
Weather windows, Christmas climbs, summit conditions, and how to pick the right route for a December ascent.
Is December a Good Time to Climb Kilimanjaro?
The short answer: yes — especially the second half of December. Early December falls in the tail of the short rains season (November through mid-December), which brings some afternoon cloud and intermittent rain on the lower forest slopes. From around 20 December onward, the weather stabilises, skies clear, and conditions become excellent.
December is not the best month on the mountain — July and August take that distinction — but it is a solid choice, particularly for those whose calendar constraints make late December the only viable window.

December Weather by Altitude Zone
Rainforest Zone (1,800m to 2,800m)
Most variable in December. Early in the month, expect afternoon rain and high humidity. The forest canopy provides some shelter, but boots get wet. From mid-December onward, rain diminishes noticeably. Pack waterproof gaiters regardless of when you depart.
Moorland Zone (2,800m to 4,000m)
Cloud often sits in this zone in early December, bringing cool and damp conditions. By late December, mornings are typically clear with afternoon cloud building — a normal pattern that rarely affects trekking.
Alpine Desert (4,000m to 5,000m)
Above 4,000m conditions are drier year-round. December brings cold nights and clear mornings. The short rains rarely penetrate this high. This is where December really starts to perform.
Summit Zone (5,000m to 5,895m)
Summit temperatures range from -10C to -20C at night. Light snow is possible on the crater rim. Wind speeds on summit night are typically lower in December than in peak dry season. Visibility from mid-December onward is generally excellent.

Christmas Climbs
Christmas week (23 to 31 December) has become one of the most meaningful windows for milestone climbers. Summiting on Christmas Day or standing at Uhuru Peak as the new year approaches is an experience that stays with people for decades.
The logistics work well. A departure on 23 or 24 December on a 7-day Machame or Lemosho climb puts summit night on 29 or 30 December — returning to Arusha for New Year's Eve. Those who prefer a Christmas Day summit start on 18 or 19 December.
One practical note: Christmas week books out faster than most other periods. Confirming by September is advisable.

Best Routes for December
8 days, gradual ascent, excellent acclimatization. The longer profile means early-December weather variability is less impactful — by the time you reach altitude, conditions have usually settled. Lemosho's western approach tends to be drier in December than Machame.
7 days, 90 to 93% success rate. The most popular route for Christmas departures because the 7-day schedule slots neatly into the holiday period. Summit night falls on Day 6.
7 days from the north. The dry northern slopes are well-suited to December — the short rains barely affect the Rongai side. Very low traffic throughout December, including Christmas week.
9 days. The longest itinerary provides the most acclimatization time, making it the highest-success option regardless of month. If you have 9 days in December, this is the answer.
The Honest Assessment
December is not the easiest month to plan around — the first two weeks can be wetter than ideal. But from 20 December onward, conditions are genuinely good. If your window is Christmas week specifically, you are in one of the more reliable December periods, and the experience of climbing over the holiday is one that clients consistently describe as life-changing.
Mount Kilimanjaro Climb has been operating Kilimanjaro climbs since 1978. We have run Christmas departures for two decades. The mountain does not close in December. Neither do we.
