Kilimanjaro + Safari: The Ultimate Tanzania Trip

Climb Africa's highest peak, then explore the Serengeti. Here's exactly how to plan it.

You're already flying to Tanzania. The Serengeti is a three-hour drive from Kilimanjaro's base. Combining the climb with a safari is the most efficient way to experience two of Africa's greatest attractions - and it's what over 60% of our clients choose to do.

The Key Question: Safari Before or After the Climb?

Safari AFTER the Climb (Recommended)

  • You arrive fresh and focused for the mountain
  • The safari is your reward - pure relaxation after the effort
  • Your body recovers while sitting in a vehicle, not hiking
  • You appreciate the luxury of a safari lodge after a week in tents
  • 90% of our combo clients choose this order

Safari BEFORE the Climb

  • Works if you want to ease into Tanzania gradually
  • Safari serves as acclimatization (Ngorongoro is at 2,200m)
  • Risk: you might be tired from early morning game drives
  • Works best with a rest day in Arusha between safari and climb
  • About 10% of our combo clients choose this order

Recovery Time: How Much Do You Need?

After summiting Kilimanjaro, most people feel tired but elated. You'll descend on the same day you summit (or the next morning), arriving back in Arusha by afternoon. Here's what to expect:

We always recommend at least one full rest day between the climb and the safari. Some clients skip it and go straight to safari - they manage fine, but they enjoy it more with a day to recover.

Cost Savings: Combo vs Separate Trips

Booking a climb and safari as a combo through Mount Kilimanjaro Climb saves you money compared to booking separately:

What to Pack for Both

The good news: you don't need to carry your safari clothes up the mountain. Mount Kilimanjaro Climb stores your safari luggage in Arusha while you climb. Pack two separate bags:

Climb Bag

Layered clothing, waterproofs, warm summit gear, hiking boots, headlamp, daypack. Your porter carries up to 15kg.

Safari Bag

Neutral-coloured clothing, camera with telephoto lens, binoculars, sunscreen, hat. Stored in Arusha until you return.

Best Time for a Combo Trip

The best months for both Kilimanjaro climbing and safari overlap perfectly: January-March and June-October. These months offer dry conditions on the mountain and excellent wildlife viewing in the parks. July-September is the absolute peak for both activities.

Which Safari Parks Combine Best with Kilimanjaro?

Not all Tanzanian safari parks are equally accessible from Kilimanjaro. The three that work best are chosen by 95% of our combo clients:

Tarangire National Park

Closest to Arusha (2-hour drive). Famous for elephant herds and baobab forests. Best in July-October when animals concentrate around the Tarangire River.

Ngorongoro Crater

3-hour drive from Arusha. The world's largest intact volcanic caldera. Lions, elephants, flamingos, and the rare black rhino.

Serengeti National Park

4-5 hours from Arusha (or 1-hour flight). The Great Migration passes here July-October. 4 days minimum for a meaningful visit.

The Acclimatisation Benefit: How Safari Helps on the Mountain

Here's something most operators don't tell you: the safari doesn't just feel like a reward after the climb. It actively helps your body prepare for altitude.

Ngorongoro Crater sits at 2,200m - the same altitude as Machame Camp on Day 2 of your climb. Spending two days at crater rim elevation (sleeping at 2,400m) gives your body a gentle introduction to altitude before the real pressure starts at 3,000m+.

Our family has operated both climbs and safaris since 1978. We sometimes recommend doing the safari first for clients who are flying out more than 10 days after their climb.

What Happens if Your Climb Is Delayed by Weather?

This is a real consideration, particularly in the shoulder seasons (June and October). If your summit attempt is pushed back by 24-48 hours, here's what happens to your safari:

Frequently Asked Questions: Climb + Safari Combos

Can I do the safari before the climb?

Yes. Ngorongoro Crater at 2,200m acts as altitude pre-acclimatisation. We recommend a rest day in Arusha between the safari and the climb.

How long between the climb and safari?

One full rest day in Arusha is the minimum. Two is better - especially after the 7-day Machame route. Use the rest day for laundry, a massage, and eating everything on the menu.

Should I add Zanzibar to a climb + safari combo?

Zanzibar is a 1-hour flight from Arusha. We recommend 2-3 nights minimum. 4-5 nights is better if you have the time.

What if I'm not physically recovered enough for safari?

Most climbers are fine for game drives 48 hours after descent. A game drive is sitting in a vehicle. We can arrange a shorter itinerary if needed.

Is it safe to combine a climb and safari in one trip?

Absolutely. Mount Kilimanjaro Climb has been operating combined climb-and-safari itineraries since 1978. The physical demands are very different - the climb is endurance, the safari is observation.
